How is the performance of the machine?
I haven't had any problems with it. I love it. I do have the 80GB system with backwards compatibility though. But other than being able to play PS2 games (so far all of them but Battlefront 2 >< - it cuts out randomly.) on it I don't see any difference between mine and the newer models that friends have. Pretty stable and I can charge my Blackberry on it's controller cables :D

Also does every game have to install?
No, I don't get how that has became such a common gripe. Online updates sure, and games like RDR do it. (Massive games) But I have used mine with a lot of games as have my friends and it is rare for the install thing to pop up when putting in a new game. RDR and MW2 (I think) are the only two I can actually recall doing it.

Yes, it's worth it, the performance is better than the 360 if you tap into the true power of it although few too less games actually do. And you only download some games, not all, for like 5-10mins and thats it (except for MGS4 where you have to install EVERY time you enter a new chapter, even if you beat the game and start over, you have to in the first part again [you can only have one chapter installed at a time because it's that big]).

The game library is getting better and the PSN is good (no where near xbox live though so don't except that level of service). The exclusives are OVERALL better on the PS3 imho, although Halo: Reach is my favorite exclusive for either the PS3 and 360). You get MGS4, Killzone 2 (3 soon), Uncharted 1 & 2 (3 coming soon as well), GOW3, Resistence 1 & 2 (3 coming soon), Infamous (2 is coming out soon), Little Big Planet (2 is coming out soon as well and I know I sound like a broken record).

Probably a little more stable than my 360, but the difference isn't really noticeable as neither tends to crash very often at all, and the installations arn't really very common at all with games now, some of the older games do but now it's fairly rare.

It's just like the 360 in some ways, when it comes to third party support and the such, although I don't know which one has better exclusives. I guess your opinion on exclusives (by genre I mean) would largely affect whether or not you enjoy the console. Although, if you also want a Blu-Ray player, then it's definitely a plus as the PS3 reads Blu-Ray disks. Also, live is free, and the system definitely crashes less than the Xbox 360, which is to say not at all. I own both the Xbox 360 and the PS3, and on the 360 I have gotten the red ring of death while the PS3 hasn't crashed once for me. I'd personally say the PS3 is better in terms of hardware and game library, but the online for Xbox 360 is better (for me at least, because that's what most of my friends have and I usually play with them). So it definitely depends what kind of games you like to play.

EDIT: Forgot about your second question. I'd say it rarely ever has to install, I own something like 30+ games and I've only had to install MAYBE 2. It's something that is definitely over-dramatized by fanboys to boost their console above the PS3, while it's a very minor issue that I wouldn't even consider and issue, as it simply helps the game to run cleaner without maybe hiccups.

Yes. Reason? Look up list of upcoming titles coming exclusively (and non-exclusively) next year.

You'd better make sure you're sitting before you read the list though.

Being a PS3 owner is the single greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Better than losing my virginity, better than graduating college and better than finally being accepted to collect my unemployment insurance.

Although, I just downloaded x-men arcade...man I gotta stop buying nostalgic games. I remember BEGGING my parents for quarters to play that when I was a kid. Now, I'm not sure why.
Thanks for the heads up. I was planning on getting that in the next week or two and now I know to go in with nostalgia goggles on. That game single handedly robbed me of so many dollars in quarters.

Not every game has to install, but many newer games do.

The kicker is that after every download, you have to install. With installation taking up a good chunk of time based on the size of the download.

The God of War 3 demo was massive, and took ages to download, followed by 5 minutes of installation.

It's still good to own a PS3, though.

I think the longest install I came across was MGS4, at about 10 minutes. Other than that, I don't have a lot of complaints. I'd recommend it.

There was that one time with the PSN bug that caused some trouble, including forcing my wireless router to re-live past lives. Seemed to be an isolated incident.

Each console has its advantages and disadvantages. Each console has a site that goes through what each device can do.

Personally I have an Xbox because my best friend has one and I wanted to play online with him.

Though one could argue that the Playstation 3 is vastly inferior simply because Christian Weston Chandler swears that it's the greatest console ever.

Performance-wise it's about as good as any other console. You do get a few bad ports but they've gotten a lot better in the past year or so, and game-play is rarely compromised.

Really the main selling point is the exclusives. The PS3 has more but you still need to check if any of them interest you. I like non-shooter/single player games so it wins by a clear mile for me as far as games are concerned.

I love my PS3. I've only had one issue with it and that was purely my fault ... ... don't leave them on over 3 days or so... like I said, my own fault. And the service was fantastic for it, got it back quick and have had no issues since.

honestly the only reason I even own a 360 is because my friend was selling his cheap and I wanted to play the Fable series and Rumble Roses XX.

I whole heartedly recomend the system.

Yes. Yes, yes, yes. And yes. It is a system for true media junkies and psuedo-nostalgic gamers.

I'm loving mine, but I only have 3 games because I am a broke mofo.

BUT I CAN PUT LOLI ON IT.

If you can, buy a 60gb model, swap out the drive for a 500-750gb and get ready to ROCK.
