Is it just me, or are all the best games the ones no one knows about?

Let me just preface this by saying that yeah, there are definitely mainstream games I've played that I've enjoyed the hell out of - the Half Life series being a notable entry.

But in saying that, there've been a lot of hugely successful games I've played that I flat out haven't been able to get into, despite multiple attempts - the main culprit here being Halo. I've started the game over about three times in an effort to find out what's so amazing about the game, but every time the level design and average gameplay just turns me off until the point where I have no desire to play it anymore.

But back to the point of this article, my favourite games by far would have to be Psychonauts, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, and System Shock 2 (granted, there's a pretty big cult following of SS2 but for argument's sake I'd say that's mainly due to people jumping on the Bioshock bandwagon). So why don't you people buy them? *Shakes fist*

Just wondering if anyone shares my thoughts.
The once that "No one" knows of? You mean the once that are not thought up yet?
Be spesific, man!
Figure of speech. The ones that "no one" knows of refers to games that are not mainstream, indie games with small followings, if you will.

In that case

my GOD I love you GoblinOnFire

You took two awesome things - a goblin, and fire - and put them together. That's almost as awesome as a shark that can fly.

Aag, yes. I particularly like Disgaea, though I haven't played it much since I beat it. I'm trying to do the extra stuff, now, but the cave of ordeals has such huge level gaps between stages... oh well.

Are there -any- RPGs that are mainstream? I'm not talking about a first person RPG, like Elder Scrolls or Fallout 3. I'm thinkin' more like Disgaea and Final Fantasy. (Of course, personally, I enjoy turn-based combat).

If Final Fantasy doesn't qualify as mainstream selling millions of copies and being (until recently) Sony's biggest console-seller, then what will it take to become mainstream? A breakfast cereal and kids' show?

Equip nostalgia goggles, comrades. Old games are made of win.
I played one not so long ago called Clyde's Adventure - old (about 1993 I think), vague and not very well known - but also slightly infuriating. Good times.

I'd start disagreeing with you, but Klonoa: Door to Phantomile is pretty much the greatest platformer ever.

To be honest I didn't like SOM2 anywhere near as much. In the first game when you hit enemies they went into a being hit animation where you couldn't hit them again, and a similar thing happened if you were attacked. They took that crucial aspect out of the second game, which ruined the flow and dissolved the fights into endless slashing and hacking rather than setting up rythmic attack patterns and the enemy having a chance to attack back at you.[/quote]

your right!, I have been playing some more of SOM2, and the original is still better, dont get me wrong SOM2 is still a bloody good game its just that, the timing is all gone, and when you a vs-ing something that is a few levels weaker than you can pummel them and they are to weak so you auto block all their attacks anyway, besides that the ones that do hit dont really hurt anyway, maybe a couple of hp, and when you are evenly matched i find you are just constantly healing yourself all the time (hence the limit has gone from maximum 4 healing items to 9, cuz you really need it) and this can get tedious (and expensive if you arent very good)

Just enjoy your hidden treasures for what they are and write a review if you feel that inspired. I heavily endorse ATLUS's Shin Megami games, along with the occasional SNES RPG (7th Saga, anyone?) or something different like Indigo Prophecy or Mister Mosquito. Gotta love those bargain PS2 games.

Final Fantasy is definitely mainstream among it's existing market and I've been telling my FF friends for years that they need to jump ship and give SMT: Nocturne a chance.

The only games I have been a fan of that don't seem all the popular are Victoria, and EU III. However, I can see why they aren't hugely popular. Almost no marketing and most don't like grand strategy games.

Also I am a huge fan of multi player games. Favorite games of all time are Battlefield 1942, SWG, Team Fortress Classic. So having a game not be rather popular for me is a bag thing. Also generally have gaming friends who have the same feelings towards games so all games a play seem popular since a good chunk of people I play with will also get my game.

You mean like Arx Fatalis, Timesplitters, Vampire The Masquerade:Bloodlines and Mercenaries?

Sure, some people never find an oasis until you tell them where it is, then everyone can enjoy the water.
