IMO, little bit of both. But since you mentioned that programming is one of your hobbies, why not make a game of your own? Nothing major; a little quirky thing. ^_^ Food for thought.

To some degree, yes. While games have rapidly fallen in quality (mainly from induction of mainstream people, casual gamers, and sequel selling power), I'd say if you haven't found a good game in FOUR YEARS, something is up with you. There have been a few gems in that time.

Nostalgia goggles, oh sure there were plenty of great games in the past and the amunt of third rate/shoverlware titles has exploded but thats all to do with the industry growing larger. Dont act like it was all roses and flowers there was the fare share of crap back in the hay day aswell.

No it's definitely not just you,I feel the same way with the past 4 years. There have been a couple good ones though but games aren't the same as back then and it makes me really sad. :(
NOSTALGIA ALERT! -smashes Nintendo 64-
OT: No, it is DEFINITELY just you. Wolfenstein is coming out, Batman: Arkham Asylum is coming out, MW2, Halo 3 ODST, BioShock 2, AC2, and Splinter Cell: Conviction. Yes, indeed, it is only you who feels this.
True some games coming out are gonna be good and there are still great games out there but nothing will ever compare with the good old days. And hate to break it to you if it weren't for Nintendo almost none of those games would exist because if it weren't for Nintendo there wouldn't be any consoles.

Look the thing is your are older than you were back when you played all those games so of course you view games differently so they don't seem to think games now a days are as good. So its not that games are bad its just that their different from what we grew up with.

I feel as though it's always been that way, but when we were younger, we had less of a disposable income and could therefore only afford/would only get given as presents a few videogames in an entire year. Therefore, it seemed like a larger percentage of games were great, especially since when younger we have a more limited perspective of the world, gaming community included.

Games are all getting about graphics and story, "cool guy #1 (and sometimes #2) must destroy this organization/person after a war/slumber/just-felt-like it by going around and destroying smaller yet just as important people/groups/important objects" might not be your thing. Multiplayer is the greatest thing about this generation though, and the different FPS games are pretty much different flavors of the same thing "kill your friends".

I don't think the problem is with the games per say. A lot of it is that when talking about older games, you have a much bigger pool to choose from. Besides that, I think games improve in graphics, and stay just as good in terms of play. That's the problem. Games need to broaden there horizons.

I have to agree, I've played some good stuff in the past few years, but not anything that made me say, "this is a great game." Really nothing this console gen holds up to the previous gen.

all major games are made by large companies who's only goal is to make money, in the past games would be made by 1 personor a small group of people, they had originality they dident try to be something they could never be, new games try to create a "realistic" atmosphere which just doesent work, its a game, it shouldent try to be realistic.. The new tombraider was probably the biggest dissapointment, it started with Chronicles, then Angel of the darkness, now its just stupid and worthless, maybe I should go buy a N64 and PS1 again...
All the games you listed above were made by major companies (except Tibia's, but that wasn't exactly just a few guys either). It was about the money then, and it's about the money now. They just have more tools today to work with. What exactly is it about CoD4, Crysis, and Gears that doesn't appeal to you? Tomb Raider is already rather notorious for its lack of change throughout the years.
I know I was refering to the very beginning of games :) And there is actually only a group of people working on Tibia, less then 10 I think but I could bewrong..

Basically with COD4, Crysis, Gears it feels like I am walking through a maze shooting enemies, what is different about these 3 games? Its the same game just like another version of it, instead of shooting Terorists I am shooting aliens.. it feels more like watching a movie then PLAYING a game, can you disagree with that?

The thing I liked about the older games:

Tibia: The only MMORPG I played seriously, graphics sucks but it was fun, it felt like it meant something, when I ran around killing people and some high level guy would run after me my heart would start racing I would yell out loud "no no, help me fast" whilst typing "help me" to people..

OLD PES: Felt really "free" could run around anywhere and turn quickly. With the new ones it does everything for you, you can just hold the arrow of the direction youre shooting at and keep pressing "pass" until the ball is close enough, then you press "shoot"

Tomb Raider: One of my if not THE favourit game I have played. It required thinking, I would be stuck in a place for ages sometimes week until.. I got it! If I jump up there I can jump across the wall or something like that.. It always had a nice story, Lara the architect.. also running around her house finding hidden passages was great too..

New games don't really suck, but I do feel that I've yet to play a game as memorable as half the ones I played on the SNES...or even the PS2.

Can people stop saying it is just me, theres been several people saying it is not, which means it is not. But please carry on with this thread, its interesting how some people think it has and some people think the complete opposite.

And Nostalgia means a longing for the past doesent it? Like when old people always say "things were better in the olden days" .. I feel like an old person :p
