Sometimes the publisher is to blame for a shit game.

IMO Crysis could've been made better. I can see a few obvious but little additions that could've made it a whole lot better. Crysis: Warhead made a good start but still missed some obvious additions that would've worked well.

That being said, I still enjoyed Crysis and Crysis: Warhead a lot. But they could've been better.

games are focusing to heavily on graphics as of late and not putting enough time into the game play aspects, therefore boring
This is what happens when publishers try to rush a game's release, not realizing that a better game = more freaking money!!!!! But no, they want a quick buck now, the greedy fucks.
That's true but they're in a catch 22. If the graphics suffer any then they get docked major points by consumers and critics for it. Even if the controls are tight and make sense. If they game has crappy controls they tend to be overlooked by the consumers if it's pretty. The same is true for story, as long as the story isn't overly convoluted. Then again MGS4 had great controls, was pretty, and was over the top convoluted. The modern gamer tends to want games that look pretty first and thus publishers who are at a loss for time because of their share holders rushing them shine the game up and send it on its happy way.

I just can't get over the fact you consider Warcraft 3 an old game.

Does that make Final Fantasy VII an antique?
Dude Warcraft 3 is from 2002, thats 7+ years old. What would you consider it???

You're at a gaming forum... and you don't like games?

And yes, it's just you.
I dont remember saying that I dont like games, read my post :)

And it clearly isent only me, about 30% agree, maybe its partly me though, I could never see myself playing games as an adult, I have to outgrow games sometimes, but I still enjoy the the old ones due to memories (apart from wc3) Reason I like wc3 is probably because it actually requires strategical skill bit its kind of ruined as people have been spending 6 years perfectioning it soo much that you dont stand a chance, its become too nitpicky..
Why do you have to outgrow games? They're a great way to relax and blow off steam. I love getting drunk and playing video games with mates and I'm 18. This seems a bit snobbish.
Ditto. My wife and I are in our 30s and we still game.

OP- There are a few high quality games out there this gen but I think one of the reasons we aren't seeing as many is because many of the older franchises are getting by on their legacy rather than what they're producing now: GTA4 and Burnout Paradise are two of the most overrated games of this gen and it's probably mostly due to their previous games being so good.

Then there's just the praised crap of this gen like No More Heroes which is probably only popular because it was the first original wii game to have some blood and cursing.

There are some good games this gen; we haven't hit the San Andreas, Burnout 3, Katamari trifecta we had when the last gen peaked but maybe this gen hasn't peaked yet. I sure as hell hope not.

Games are becoming more mainstream, thus less pressure on smaller development companies to make an excellent stand out game. More cash in. The industry will suffer from this by the end of the next generation, i almost garentee it.

Colleges are getting in on this cash in too by making Game development courses, sadly by the time these kids graduate this course the industry will likely be on decline.

It's not just you. Videogames peaked around the year 2000 and right now we're in a gaming depression. Nothing we can do except wait it out.

Although the majority of good games are old, seeing as there were more games produced more than four years ago than there has been since, I have had quite a few good and even great games lately. Red Faction: Guerrilla, Mercenaries 2 (which I did in fact like), and the Saint's Row series have reminded me how fun the sandbox games can be. Then there's been the TWO Bethesda RPGs that have come out, and Banjo: Nuts and Bolts which, again, I liked. There have been a lot of good games to come out in the past four years, and some truly great ones. But, my all-time favorites Metal Arms, Darkwatch, and the original Mercenaries did come out a while ago, so I'd be inclined to agree.

I dont' think any of the new games are BAD I just don't think they're just as fun, the sooner games developments hits the "graphics ceiling" the better, then they can focus on the parts of games that aren't just eye-candy :)

Is this just me?

I havent found a game I like made within the last 4 years!

The games I like: Warcraft3, counter strike cz, Tombraider (1,2,3,4), crash bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Tekken 3, GTA, Diablo2, old PES, worms (2, world party, armageddon), a mmorpg called Tibia a while back. As you can see I play most genres :p

Games I have tried to like: Crysis, COD4, new tombraiders, wow, new fifa+PES, Gears of War 1, Test drive unlimited etc.

I play them for a couple hours (if that even) then just stop, theyre just boring, thats the only way I can explain it.

I got my first games console at age 5, a PS1 then GB colour, GB Advanced SP, PS2, XBOX 360, Wii and a proper gaming pc couple years ago. I sold my Wii after 2 weeks because it sucked, only console I have at the moment is PS2 and 360, havent played neither for over a year.

I'm 15 now, the only game I play ocassionally is warcraft3 and thats it, am I just getting too old for games or what??

It feels like the new games are too easy, in terms of requiring creativity and theyre just not.. exciting.. I remmeber playing tomb raider finding hidden areas and actually caring about the game, wanting to complete it, finding out how the story ends.. the stories on the new games are just crap, I just dont care about them, it feels meaningless ???
2007 has been acclaimed as being the best year for gaming EVER... so if you can't find some satisfaction in that year alone then... fuck...

No offence but I agree with the people that think it's just you. Not all games suck, just the titles that focus on graphics more than gameplay. This is why I hate Nintendo-Haters, because they hate the Wii because of its low graphical capabilities when compared to the PS3 and 360, even though the Wii clearly had more original exclusive titles compared its competitors. I do enjoy some recent games, like Super Smash Bros, Sam & Max, Madworld and I thought The Conduit was good (and that's saying alot, I hate FPSs and that one was the only one I gave a crap about).

Personally, I feel the problem is games are becoming more diverse in some ways, but are avoiding experimenting in others because companies can't currently afford to, meaning there will be a lot of games missing the marks of various groups due to changes that are not popular, while appearing stagnant due to similar storyline, character design etc.

To be quite honest, there were tons of crappy games even in the old days, it's just that we tend to remember to good ones and forget about the crap. Also, there have been a number of games in the past year I enjoyed. Most recently, Anno 1404 (a.k.a. Dawn of Discovery). There's also a number of games I'm looking forward, such as Dragon Age: Origins. If I have any complaints it's console exclusives, but that's old news.

15, and you think you're too old? It's just you. I obviously enjoyed games more when I was a kid, but that was because I enjoyed everything more. Rolling a plastic truck in the sand for many hours, building a castle of my toys for many hours (actually did this, it was awesome), playing with action figures etc.

I at the moment kind of have the same thing that games bore me, but it's only been for a few months. I don't think it means I'm too old, or the games are worse. I hope it's a passing thing.

my theory is this: In each genre of games there are one or two that stand above the rest and all other games in that genre attempt to be as similar to that game as possible.
I know thats pretty much a given but its the best guess I can come up with.

You liked Tomb Raider and Tekken. I think you may just have terrible taste. Only explanation I can think of.
