Is it me, or are games getting easier?

There are still difficult(and rewarding) games out there but yes they are far less common than they used to be.

The old days of the arcades and even pinball if we want to include all arcade gaming are known for insane difficulty. Why?? Because you payed to play per turn. Pac-Man, Defender, Donkey Kong and all those sorts of games are brutal games. That brutal that only a handful of people in the world ever "master" these games. The same goes for Pinball. When I say "master", I mean those that can complete these sorts of games, as they were never actually intended to ever be completed or clocked in the case of pinball.

The first consoles emulated alot of these games and the difficulty was still there. then Nintendo and Sega, the games all got a tad easier but were still very difficult. I don't remember any game being a breeze to complete or something you thought was guaranteed, like todays games.

Although alot of games have got easier, mainly the more popular types, like shooters have sort of had too to attract more people. Games are a massive big business now and this is just the reality. In saying that though, I don't mind that some games have been "noobed up" a bit..Playing the old shooters like Counter-Strike could be frustrating because you would always be up against gun players, which is all good but I am a little older now and the "modern" shooter, while frustrating at times is alot easier for me to just kick back and play. I don't always want to play with people so I run solo and can do quite well. I used to be one that used to say it was a bad thing that games have got easier but I got to look at the fact that I still play all sorts of games and still love it just as much as I ever have, so they are doing something right. Also there are still plenty of games out there that are difficult.

I agree but not all of them are easy. I got Donkey Kong Country Return and I found it super tough and I had to admit defeat and took the Super Kong mode to get me through some of the tougher levels. I don't know why I found it so tough considering I can breeze through Donkey Kong Country on the SNES several years ago (or it could be the controls). Either way this make me realise how easy games are today like E.G Super Mario Galaxy. I pretty sure I never had to use like 3 or move life on that game.

Did you for a moment consider that you are getting better at playing games?
I have. As I posted on the first page. I would like to point out have you personally found a game genre or type you don't typically play, and yet still find it somewhat non-challenging? A game where mechanics don't match another. E.G. FPS play to RTS play.

Try Demon's Souls's if you have a PS3.

Problem Solved.
That's not hard though, it's just got very cheap insta-kills everywhere.

OT: I feel it too, but I think it could be us getting used to games more, and developing our brains to prepare for what games have to challenge us with. Seriously, go play a game you haven't played since you were very young that you thought was hard as hell. It won't feel as if it's at the same difficulty.
The cheap insta kills is what made most NES (and games of that generation) hard in the first place.

Games have been getting easier for the past decade. Ever since the N64/PS1 era rolled 'round and everything started getting dumbed down (PC AND console, PC supremists) and made easier for all the kiddies.

that's due to the death of the arcade, witch point was to be hard so you put in that hard earned quarter into the slot, and another and another. but there is little point to imposable chalange any more.
That may be but I remember playing Toy Story on my Sega Genesis, and when you lost you went to the beginning. I beat it once. It was a hard game.
i remember toy story, i got to the Doomish pizza planet level once never beat it thou i may need to pull that puppy from the attic.

also Extra Credits made a great vid talking about this. it's on this site check it out.
I beat Toy Story for the Sega Genesis a number of times if I remember correctly. What exactly did you find so hard about the Pizza Planet level?
not that level is hard but levels getting up to that point the pizza planet have no enemies if i remember. and i was like 10 (or something like that)

A lot of people say that about Demon's Souls but consider Megaman to be a good example of what hard games should be. "Punishing" games tend to be all the same: Move correctly. Do not die.

Not really. Assasin's Creed's Templar puzzles have had me scratching my head for hours, and RDR is really, really fucking hard without aim assist on.

Besides, I don't want games that are so I hard there's a high chance I'll never finish them.

I agree. At least on Brotherhood glyphs. AC 2 Glyphs weren't so bad.

ehh it depends on the games

but in modern games the progressive learning curve is infinitely better, older games didn't have checkpoints and all that fun anti rage stuff, so overall i would say yes a little bit, however modern games put rage in check with checkpoints and autosaves/saves.
