Is it natural to suck at SF4?

Despite what people say here my roomate has been pretty damn successful Button-Mashing while playing online.
The guys who play online aren't very good in general. I got a whopping 2000bp during the first evening, the Playing to Win (10 wins in a row) achievement and the 50 wins achievement because most players were either embarrassingly predictable (dragon punches right after knockdown) or just couldn't do a simple anti-air consistently (which meant I could just do a simple jumping kick -> standing light punch -> crouching light kick -> heavy spiral arrow combo at them pretty much over and over again).

I've only met a couple good players, less than ten I'm sure, one was a good Balrog that outright decimated my Cammy, some Sagats and a good Rose. I haven't met a single good Ken, Ryu or Akuma in the entire game and I've played a good 300 ranked matches now.

Just take the palm of your hand and roll it against the controller, first one way, then the other. The results are impossible for the opponent to predict, and the randomness usually ends with his slaughter.

If your opponent adapts, begin rolling up or down in addition to left and right.

This is how i taught my girlfriend to play soul calibur, and she crushed everyone. This is a girl who is unable to grasp movement in a FPS.

Except if you play against someone who does projectiles, they can just sit back and let you mash your buttons while they just run away and spam fireballs. And it'll work, since you won't be blocking. If you start rolling up and down randomly, you're basically just leaving yourself open for antiairs.

Soulcalibur is a different beast altogether, since you have to be close to do any damage but you still won't win any tournaments with that sort of play. If you could, there wouldn't be any tournaments.

My only problem is that in older games, every time I fight Ryu or Sagat, they spam the fireballs and Shoyruken/Tiger Uppercut. Anytime I see Ken online (I don't play it myself but I know many people who do), it's all "Hadouken" until they jump and then it's "Shoyruken." How do you counter that?

Get closer to the character with a special move (Zangief's Lariat and Banishing Hand, Cammy's Spin Knuckle, Balrog's headbutt etc.) that goes through projectiles, knock them down and block the shoryuken. Then you can do basically anything you want while they're recovering. Rinse and repeat if they're stupid enough to fall for that over and over again (and they usually are). Has worked for me so far.

I don't play SF4 or fighting games but heres some advice: Button mash.
and now for some advice that actually matters.

1)adjust control settings:sometimes it's the best shit ever.

2)learn how to cancel focus attacks: this is helpful because as we all know focus attacks provide a small amount of invulnerability before launch.

3)Baiting: it's not enough to know your character's attacks. just because you ultra gauge is full to the brim doesn't mean you should pop of a special. us attacks that will lure your opponent into an opening.

4)throwing people: for once yatzee was rightabout fighters. throwin' douchie bags across the ring does get the job done. if done enough times the opposing player will get mad and bust out there hardest attack. right then and there is when you show of your "fuck you" button less and throw in your "fuckdizshitit'shoryukentime" command

But seriously, you can live without Street Fighter IV, and if you keep getting yer ass beat by the last boss, you don't suck, the computer's just a cheating fuck.
You can just drop the difficulty to "easiest" and abuse the fact that the CPU rarely punishes jumping kicks in that difficulty to unlock the characters. The arcade mode really isn't where the meat of the game is, anyway. The computer cheats just as badly in Mortal Kombat with the added fact that the game is riddled with game-breaking shit.
Believe me, I jump a lot in these games because it's the fastest way to get close, I unlocked all but 2 characters in the game but Seth was STILL a cheating bastard on the Easiest mode, NOTHING seemed to change from Normal.

It's a tough game, but you sort of get used to it given time. Even then, you'll get humbled when you go online, because there are TONS of good players out there. Just keep an open mind and remember that it's all in the spirit of fun instead of just whoring out BPs. That'll at least encourage you to vary your playing style and character choice and get more out of the game. Unlike some people. *cough*Kenplayers*cough*

Believe me, I'd love to play more people that know what they're doing. Sadly, that's a surprisingly rare chance in this game. Instead, most just go for the shotos and Sagat to just back off, throw fireballs at you and uppercuts every time they're knocked down.

That would imply that the uppercut spamming Kens actually win. They rarely do.

Practice against humans, the computers will kill you (in my experience).

Practice, Practice, and goddamn practice. It will come. Eventually.

Sagat is my best character so far, I started using him more seriously to actually break my habit of jumping into shit, since his air attacks are so garbage. I need to play online more though. My problem now aside from the controller hurting me, is that I do not finish well and end up losing matches I could have won. I want to try and learn Rufus next. If it's any consolation my brother is a Gouken player primarily.

As far as ultra combos are concerned the easiest way to do them is to not bother pressing all three punch or kick buttons just press the left button or left trigger. The real challenge is the getting the motions correct. But it isn't really relevant because a majority of the time you won't be able to use it effectively. The only time I really use it is when I'm playing as blanka or balrog and I just want to finish off an opponent who I know won't survive even if he blocks.
