I saw both Dawn Of The Dead (1978, rated R18+) and 28 Days Later(Rated MA15+) back to back for the first time a couple of months ago.
Dawn of the Dead had more decapitation, blood, guts, boom headshots and general gorn. 28 Days Later had less violence on a purely mathematical level of counting it all up, but also included a woman (one of the heroes too) hacking a screaming human into pieces with a machete, someone gouging someone else's eyes out with their thumbs, a group of people ready and willing to rape a 12-14 year old girl, a couple of minor drug references and the shocking sight of Doctor Who shooting zombies.
I would let my kids watch DotD at the age of, say 14-16. I'd let my kids see 28 Days Later at the age of about, say 14-16. And yet in law, one is considered suitable for nobody except legal adults to watch, and another suitable for teenagers in year 10.
