Is it possible for a game OST to be too hauntingly beautiful?

I've liked some of the earlier installments of the Armored Core series enough to give the newest venture "For Answer" a whirl, and I've found that the soundtrack was a pleasant and welcome part of the experience (Despite virtually non-existent level design, an aspect of a game that I pay particular attention to, I loved the art direction and the near infinite amount of customization enough to actually enjoy the game). I've often found myself with a tear at the edge of my eye whenever its haunting melodies of string and keyboard reach a climatic crescendo, to the point that for whatever reason, I can't bring myself to listen to it anymore.

Now that isn't to say that a lot of games out there that have extremely listenable soundtracks aren't good, I mean Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is a good example of a game with a soundtrack that I can listen to over and over again, so much so that I've actually gone as far as to purchase the soundtrack on iTunes. I'm thinking perhaps that because of the slightly angry edge and the electronic nature of Amon Tobin's compositions, the music emphasizes the cold, efficient, and almost mechanically calculating method Sam Fisher uses to swiftly get the jump on his victims that I'm far more comfortable when listening to the score in Chaos Theory, whereas the soundtrack of Armored Core had a very melancholic, emotional feel to it that makes you feel like you're part of something thats totally majestic and beautiful that it transcends the worldly, techno-thriller nature that envelops the paranoid world of Tom Clancy.

Anyhoo, anyone else get that type of feeling when a game soundtrack is so hauntingly beautiful that you can't bring yourself to listen to it on a regular basis?

I don't know if one could consider 'Battle of the Heroes' from the Star Wars Episode 3 soundtrack an OST. But it was used in Battlefront 2, and that score gives me chills anytime I hear it. Even while playing!

not sure about the whole sound track but i remember playing red alert 1 when Hell march came on, boy does that song get you all worked up and ready to send your army to fight!

i think it actually won an award of some sort.

There's always been a few games that I load up specially to listen to the music.

But the Nuclear War Game that was released recently...seriously can't play that due to the music.

On that note, Yahtzee's videos would be so much better with the Unforgotten Realms music instead.

Funny you should mention it, it was the exact song that sprung to mind when i read OP ;)

I also very much enjoyed Halo 3's soundtrack (Yes, I am a fanboy when it comes to Halo 3), especially because it kicks in at all the right places. The ending car chase in particular is pushed forward by the epic score. I don't really listen to it when I'm not playing, but it's surely one of the greatest soundtracks I've ever heard.

Honorable mention goes to Jesper Kyd and his work in the Hitman series. The only problem is that it's not memorable enough really. The only tunes I recall are the cello piece played in Blood money in the first level (Bach Cello Suite No.1-1), and the title-screen music in the same game (Ave Maria), which isn't original scores, but masterly used.

You Mean DEFCON?

I do agree listing to that music as you watch nukes fly across the board and hit their targets and causality figures come up. it's kind of a solemn moment when the first ones start hitting.

Hellmarch is a really badass song for the first 3 minutes or so, then when it goes into that generic techno it gets kinda lame. Thankfully, a quick trip into cool edit pro allowed me to give birth to Hellmarch Without The Suck.

And yeah, Defcon's background music/ambient noises is some creepy shit. The occasionaly sounds of assorted human suffering very quietly popping up definitely does well at rattling the nerves.

There's a certain piece, Empty Houses, on Garry Schyman's Bioshock soundtrack which I can't listen to outside the context of the game because it is such a powerful moment in the context of the story.

(The other tracks on the Bioshock OST I can't listen to simply because they're so damn SCARY!)

As a massive fan of Nobuo uematsu, I get that feeling with most his work. FF6's sound track is quite possibly one of the best sound tracks I have ever heard in a video game ever.

That's the one. Played it once and then had to delete it.

Adagio for Strings from Homeworld gets me in a similar way.

Bioshock has THE GREATEST sound track ever. It fits in with the atmosphere perfectly - the darkness, the eeriness and the tension - beautiful! I would often load up the game just to listen to it, but was lucky enough to find the OST and downloaded it. Still gives me chills listening to it now.

I never played the actual game but I love the soundtrack of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. I'm a big Amon Tobin fan.
