Is it possible for an elitist to fit in with the masses? How?

Okay...this struck a nerve that you really shouldn't have, Sung. Have you ever been out and about with friends (if any) IRL? Have you known a person, a friend from childhood that you thought you knew oh so well? Have you ever been attacked by that person in ways that no one ever, EVER should? And I don't mean betrayed by internet friends like you wrote on the blog you wrote on your first post here on the Escapist, I mean by actual people you personally knew and hung out with at school on a regular basis. To say that you've seen the worst of humanity means absolute bullshit. I've for the most part stayed silent on your posts, but I'm gonna be fucking honest here, you are EXACTLY like the fucker that ruined me. At the very risk of getting this post flagged or being banned from this forum, I'm gonna make a suggestion. Leave, go to Tumblr where you will probably fit in better, go to 4Chan and wave your elitist attitude. Continue your rhetoric here on the Escapist ad nauseam if you wish, you'll find very few that will agree with you.

Ooh, ooh! Another Sung-Hwan thread about self-importance and narcissism?

Can't wait to see how this one turns out!

Honestly OP, you've asked this same question numerous times on this forum and have received countless responses of advice and suggestions.

Are you purposely ignoring everyone's advice or do you just not understand their responses? I would think at this point you'd pick up on some of it, but you keep asking the same questions.

Is this a schtick? Is this some performance-art parody of a stereotype of 'nerd culture'? I'm genuinely confused by this.[footnote]I mean, not really. But it doesn't hurt to ask.[/footnote]

Ok, I can se where you coming from. You consider yourself a well informed person, you go after things to read, watch and such, yo ulook for the information you want, instead of simply being fed by something already programed, and because of that, you feel sort of above those who don't do that.

Well, you're not. And one day life will hit you hard and fast, like the little engine that could, and you're going to realize that, we all do, that's a normal thing. Besides, this is the internet, how hard it is to find stuff?
You said you've been trying to mellow out to change your attitude a little, no dude, you should try to humble out a little,, interact with people just for the sake of it, not because you're going to illuminate their lives. Being agressive might even be a part of your personality, people deal with that, and that has nothing to do with being a douche.

And man, I'm going to second what Michael said over here. You've seen the WORST of human beings? I mean, c'mon, I've seen people on this very forum dealing with shit because of their nationality or sexuality, suffering abuses, even from their parents! Discussing stuff on the internet, is not, by far, the worst of humanity. But I get it, there's a lot of shit online, so, as a defense mechanism, we separate ourselves from the others, because we don't want to be a part of the disgusting thigs we read, see, of even suffer.

That doesn't make you special either. Want to make something different? Well, everytime someone "acts evil / is bad / abuses", there are victims involved. How bout doing something good for those peole? Hey, how about doing real voluntary work? With children or something. That will teach you a LOT of stuff you can't learn online.

What I've learned is to simply keep doing what I am doing and remain anonymous in my work. I will pop up every now and then to try to assist people that I view as wrong, but if they refuse to listen to reason, I will leave them to drown in their ignorance. The latter has always been the greatest challenge for me because when my words arent listened to, I always reacted violently.
Just because you view something as wrong doesn't make it wrong. You have learned nothing it seems.

At this point, I will have to agree with everyone

OP, you are starting to sound very petulant and arrogant and coming from someone who know what you are like because I still am that person, that means something.

You have not seen the worst of people, for every hardship you have as an anime watching Korean, there are people out there you have tons more stuff to deal with that you would break under.

I am still learning this but let me tell you right now, you are not a god of anime watchers, you are just a fan like any other and you need to shape up before everyone leaves you.

Now, I'm as amused as everyone else about this whole shenanigan, but what specific hardships do anime-watching Koreans face?
People assuming they're japanese and not subbing their episode in Korean?

Note: Elitist not in the bad sense, but someone with much more knowledge and experience than the lost.

With over sixteen years worth of experience in gaming and its sub mediums, several hundreds worth of anime seen, ongoing activity in visual novels, overall knowledge, and experience as a partial writer for specific groups, I effectively fit the bill for an "elitist;" though I never liked to entitle myself as this. As someone who never bothered to interact with the mainstream audience, (being tied to small groups of people I know) I only have a gist of an idea of how the masses think. I want to be a part of this "mainstream audience" to better understand how these people think, for a big article I am planning for a future application somewhere.

And because it's fun because I was once a novice myself.

Because I have such a different viewpoint on things from "casuals," I find it difficult to interact with them. I've tried feigning stupidity and being an asshole, but neither worked out for me in the end.
Have you tried just NOT sounding like a pretentious asshole? The Lost? Are you serious?

I know A LOT about video games, and I do a lot of research on different forms of media including anime, movies, animation, etc where they came from, where they're going, all that fun stuff because I love these mediums a lot and just think they are all super interesting. I have NEVER had "problems" fitting in with the "mainstream" because of this. If anything it's super useful for having a bunch of different conversations on different topics with different people.

Basically what I'm getting at is your vast pool of knowledge is not the problem here, your holier than thou attitude is the problem. For such a "knowledgeable" guy it sure sounds like you need to smarten up.

If you refer to yourself as an "elitist" and constantly try to shove your particular interests in people's faces, continuously lecture them about things you know about and tell them how wrong they are about a particular topic all the time then you will probably never be able to fit in. Arrogance is an extremely off-putting thing, yet there is a lot of it in the world. Everyone, and I mean everyone is ignorant about something. Therefore no one is justified in being arrogant just because they know a lot about a specific topic. For example, I personally know a heck of a lot about military history, strategic and military issues, how intelligence services work, etc. I'm finishing up my MA on military and intelligence history. That being said, I keep myself humble. I know nothing about cars, I have never had a real full-time job, never had a girlfriend, I can't dance, I have never traveled extensively....blahblahblah. In other words, I have no reason to be arrogant because there is so much out there that other people understand far better than me. Heck, even within my little military history bubble there are plenty of people I consider more informed than myself.

What an ironic thing to say, considering your own posts make up a significant portion of the "vile parts" of this thread.

I'm either missing something or being trolled because as I recall, Escapist is specifically a site centered around high end gaming journalism. I'm surprised how many people here act so antagonistic towards someone (me) who is a representation of that high end elitism.

No, I don't think it could be that.
I don't know where you're from, but in my town people HATE Korean anime-watchers. If you're from Korea and like anime you ain't getting a job, but you might get the shit kicked out of you. It's a very specific prejudice I grant, but not a trivial one.

Fair point. But remind me, what exactly have you done to demonstrate your high-end elitism?

Fair point indeed. And nothing so far because my field in elitism are specifically centered around anime mediums, and my knowledge of gaming does not extend to many people as my interests are fairly niche and I do not follow drama much. I don't talk about anime on this site for obvious reasons, but I come here every now and then for (maybe mistakenly) advice on how to interact with people on other sites. Since I always clash with Western anime fans and mainstream gamers, the few friends I have are very specific.
