Dude there are some pretty bad ass things in the old testament, In Judges (i believe, somewhere after David) an Israelite warrior defeats 1000 armed solders with the jaw bone of a Donkey (really look it up :D). The escape from slavery could make for an atmospheric and moving game if done right.

Or for an interesting take you could reverse perspectives and be part of the Roman Government/Pharisee's trying to hunt down Jesus. That could get into so really interesting territory, the some non-Christians might get a kick out of gunning for Christ, Christians might like it if it was historically accurate and exciting (like The Passion of the Christ but more fighting and less gore), and purely as an ancient combat or stealth or mass effect like game you could create a lot of entertaining gameplay

I realize that the Escapist isn't exactly the best place to discuss religion, especially Christianity. But I want you to ignore your own personal religious or anti-religious stances for this thread. Is it possible to make a good game based on the Bible?

I think so. You'd have to stick to the Old Testament, because that's where the most action is. The folly of many Bible 'games' (and I use the term VERY lightly) is that they don't take the subject matter seriously. Take, for example, Moses saving the Jews from slavery. Make that a pulse-pounding stealth/escort game. Don't make it a kiddy platformer!

Anyway, that's my stance. How about you guys?
They tried this in the NES era.
The problem tend to be who are you marketing to?
The problems they befell the nes games is they where meant primary for very young children.
Agreed for the most part. They aimed for what seemed to be the appropriate audience at the time. This really does not excuse the lack of quality in the titles, though. Most, if not all of those games were made to make a quick buck. They added colorful backgrounds to appeal to kids, and Bible quizes to appeal to parents. That is the true failing of Bible games.
yeah i would agree, what i mentioned above is about taking the subject matter itself as opposed to the physical book and taking it into a new light, I see that as the only way to make and interesting "Bible" game. But one thing it needs to avoid is what has happened to the Dante's Inferno game... o_O *Oy

The Book of Revelation is sick.
I dislike people using 'sick' as a replacement for 'awesome' or 'great'. I'm always used to using 'sick' as a term for 'disgusting' or 'wrong'.

Just sayin'.

On topic!;

Alas yes. But I'm an Atheist and I would like a Bible story game as long as it wasn't imposing Christianity on me.

Not sure if the writers of the Bible intended it to be made into a game...

or it doesn't have to be directly about the Bible, it could just relate to it a little bit...like commanding an Athenian trireme trying to ram enemy ships...or something

exactly
yup, but who knows mabye in a few decades we can just learn to coexist and slowly solve our differences over time instead of the pig headed accusations on both sides right now, if that happens then maybe.

I think a good Bible game would be this:
You run around in Jerusalem (In Oblivion Style) as Jesus, using your godly powers and artifacts to fight the Devil's minions, whilst impressing that hot young arabic chick who lives down the street. You could get several companions, such as Noah (Comes with a giant tiger pet), Moses (Who can use powerful water attacks), etc.
You would obtain powerful weapons. (eg: The Holy Hand Grenade, lol)
And in the end, you can sacrifice yourself to save the world, just like in any Bethesda game.

Ooh! And for an expansion, you would come back from the dead in the year 2000, trying to keep your identity a secret, and fighting off evil posessed punk/emo/goth kids.

Actually.. That sounds pretty kickass!

That it does.
EDIT: Upon some reflection, shouldn't Noah have two giant tigers?

Only if we can have a prologue where we play as John Paul II and slaughter satanists with a katana

The bible at it's heart is a collection of some fantastic stories (not to disrespect any religious connotations, just stating that this is what comprises the bible).

Many of these stories have amazing elements that would make for tremendous game play.

David's life alone would make a decent trilogy.
He went from fighting lions and such to protect his sheep to standing down Goliath, to becoming the arguably one of the most powerful Kings in history. He was a scholar, a poet, a warrior, and a religious leader.
His story is epic enough to rival games like Prince of Persia or even Dynasty warriors.

In fact, i'd venture to say that more than a few RPG's over the years have borrowed some of the elements of his story: young farm boy rises up against great odds to leave backwater town and become a great warrior who is destined to one day be King after defeating a great evil in the name of righteousness and good.

Yep, sounds like just about every RPG i've ever played.
