PvP no you can't with PvE you might get away with it depending on how gear reliant the game is. If it is a sub based MMO unless you want to throw money into a shredder I'd avoid playing those casually.

I came for the puzzles, stayed for the people. It works, and there's no way to play it hardcore. A pretty cool experiment if nothing else.

Of course it is - whether or not you "devote your life" to it or not is completely in your hands, not the games.
MMOs now are designed to be able to be played in small chunks especially if you play solo content. Most dungeons take no more than an hour, and raids are really the only thing that chew up time...well if you powerlevel crafting that can be a time sink too.
