Is it really worth cashing in old games?

I've been a gamer a fair portion of my life and have easily stacked up around 50 playstation 2 games and around 30 xbox games. I'm thinking of selling off all my PS2 games and console to a high street retail shop and also selling 5 or 6 xbox 360 games.
Now I have been hearing many stories of people who traded in games for a worthless amount of money, i don't really want to be one of those people. For example, one of my friends bought Fifa 10 when it first came out for £35, after a few weeks he started to dislike it and sold it back to the same shop. he was offered £8 for it. To me, that is damn rediculous, i would rather sell them privately for a higher price.

What are your views on it?

It's never worth selling games back to the shop. Plus, you'll come to miss your PS2 games, trust me, newer is not always better.

If you must sell your games then use ebay. You can get way more money that way.

I never considered it worth it. At all. Not just because of the poor shop buy-back value, but because I can't make myself part with a game.

Yeah. Most places will give you very little, even for games you sell in bulk. When I needed the extra cash I just sold what I had (old X-box and some 25 games) to a friend who had only leveled-up console wise to the Super Nintendo. Got 150 for it in the end.

I've found that, I've started buying back a lot of PS2 games. Though I didn't really have a choice to trade back then. If I didn't trade then I couldn't afford any new games.

Well, if you're certain that you will not miss them later on, then I'd say go right ahead. Of course, as Iron Lightning said, it's never really "worth it" to sell them back to the shop... But you might make another gamer happy, by getting a few more PS2 or Xbox games back out on the market.

But, you should look in to the possibility of selling some titles over the net, since some games can bring in more money that way.

When I sold back some of my games I did not get so much for it but it deference from company to company. So I think it better to sell privately if you are going to sell. But if it was me I would have played the games until the console broke down.

This.

Selling games back to Gamestop(or places like it) is a ripoff.

Personally, I go back and play old games from my collection on occasion (I recently dug up and played Crystalis for NES, if you need an example)... sometimes I like to pick up old games I never heard about when they were new... I'd never sell my games, but it's all just a personal preference. If you tend to play new games when they come out and then eventually quit 'em forever, then there's nothing wrong with selling 'em.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
old games are kind of like old cars, they can be valuable but it takes them along time to really get that value, they will be worthless for a good lone time before they become worth something

DO NOT TRADE IN YOUR OLD GAMES... It may seem like a good idea now, but you will eventually regret it... Trust me... :(

If you have a large amount of games to sell, shops usually give you a nice bonus for trading so many to them, and would be a lot less work compared to putting them on eBay (separately or not) and then waiting a few days hoping someone will want to buy them, and then the having to mail them to the buyer and hoping you don't get the shaft from the buyer. And don't forget you'll have to pay the shipping cost.

So in the end, selling them to shop yields less money, but there is a lot less hassle and you get immediate results. If I were you I would check around to see if there are any games in the shop used and if there are any deals going on before trading in the games to try and bring the value of the trade up.

Also, one last note: Some shops might not accept used PS2 or Original Xbox games anymore. I know Gamestop doesn't accept any Xbox games (not sure about PS2, but I doubt it). So your only choice for the older games might be eBay.
