Recently my gaming computer broke down so im forced to use a netbook my mom lent me now what I am wondering is if it is considered stealing if I own the game example Gothic 1 but becouse the netbook lacks a disc drive I cant install and play it like normal so is it bad to get a online copy for a game I legitedly own?

I dont support piracy or theaft and such so this is why I am asking if this kinda question is against rules then sorry in advance.
Have you considered just getting games on Steam? While a laptop won't be able to play a good deal of PC games, most games (I am not sure about all of them) you can play games on any computer that can play them, no extra charge.
I own games on disc,Steam, and GOG but the games im wanting to play are not even sold on steam

You've already got the game? You physically own it?

Yeah, I think that's kosher. You payed to play the game.
Would it still be kosher if there is bacon in the game?
Hm, I'm pretty sure that as long as you don't EAT the bacon, then it's kosher. But I'm not Jewish, so I'm not sure. Talk to your Rabbi

rights of the creator transfer to the consumer the right to distribute has a limited effect when transferring to the consumer As does the right to sell your legally purchased item However, while you can legally make a copy of the item for your own use, the right to istribute does not apply to those duplicated items. Nor does the right to sell those duplicates By law i dont think the poeple that download are breaking the law no where under copyright law or at least to what i know have they said that donloading illegal plus it not coll that the ones online can download as much they like but you trade that for a CD plus Copyright infringement only without permission from the copyright holder but you get that when you buy the game(line 3)

I wouldn't count it as stealing. My Dragon Age disk got scratched up as hell, so when I went to reinstall it I ran into some issues. My options were to either spend another $50 on a game I already have, or to download a torrent and install from there. I still own the game, I can even still use the disk to start it. (Just not for installation) Of course, since then I have gotten the Awakening disk and I can just use that.

Oh, and I was even still able to use my own product key. When you have some form of proof of purchase for a game you own, it shouldn't matter where you're installing the game from.

yes in my option i have the right to use a emulator.
Almost all of my old Pokemon games do that. It happens when the battery pack dies. All old cartridge games have those, and if they die you're out of luck. ;_;

Old thread but have to comment. What about games that are previously owned? I'm talking about games paid for at full price ($40-$50) then were pawned off for $5-$10 (if you're lucky). It seems to me that gaming publishers and developers would prefer this scenario to never buying the game in first place.

This gets into one of those gray areas for many people here. Half will say its okay, half will say its still pirating. Its also something that is unclear under the law in many places. You are allowed to maintain a backup copy of any game you legally own and this could be argued as such, some would say its still wrong.

Edit :
Man...did I call it or what. 10 pages of arguing over it with no clear answer. Seems your best option is to flip a coin and go with that.
It is as they say, go not to the Escapists for counsel, for they will say both no and yes.

If you catch the reference, I love you.

I mean, if you buy the game in it's PHYSICAL form then you would think you'd be entitled to a possibly subpar RIP of the software you purchased.

EDIT: Wow, what a necro thread.

Anyway, when you buy the game you're actually buying a license to play it. As long as you're using that license it doesn't matter where you downloaded the game from. But it is piracy if you bought the game for one system and then downloaded it for another.

I realized that but this is one of the most in depth discussions on internet piracy via a google search...

EDIT: now that i think about it they will never exactly remake the game so Nintendo is losing no money. They could exactly remake it but they would not make that much money from it. By the way heart gold and soul silver do not count as exact remakes since they added lots of new stuff to it.

In your situation i say go download it kind off the same situation i had.

This is a bit off topic, but you're describing a dead save battery. That's a relatively easy and cheap fix, if you want to do it yourself. You'll have to buy a battery and a specialized screwdriver, but that screwdriver can then be used to change the battery on other games, and Gameboy games in particular tend to get dead batteries a lot, so it's not such a bad idea to get set up for it.

OT: Standard response, morally there's absolutely nothing wrong with doing what the OP described. Legally, there is an issue unless you ripped the disc yourself. If you just download it off the internet, it's technically illegal. But illegal doesn't always mean immoral.

You'd be surprised at what all there is buried in these forums. Unfortunately the opinions skew heavily toward the "piracy is evil, and you're evil if you don't think so!" side, because it's against the rules to "advocate" piracy. Enforcement of that rule has relaxed a bit in the last year (ironically, it was more heavily enforced before they actually put it in the TOS; it used to be an unwritten rule that people still got banned for), but there it is. Some of the best threads on the subject are, unfortunately, gone forever, because they got locked, and locked threads are automatically deleted after a while.

Anyway, discussion on the subject has slowed down recently, because everyone got tired of the circular arguments, not to mention wary of accidentally admitting to piracy or advocating it in a way that calls down the banhammer.

P.S.: Good thread or not, it's not a good idea to revive something that was last posted in more than a month or two back. It's /really/ not a good idea to revive something that has fallen below the 20th page. That's what I've seen mods mentioning as the rule of thumb for whether or not to punish someone for necro-ing.
