start with Wolfenstein 3D....

then scratch your head wondering why the fuck they make such a big deal about a little swastika in Call of Duty Black Ops

you'll get it when you see the last boss of Wolfenstein ^-^
Mecha-Hitler.

Get a good PC and buy the Orange Box. Not only will you get Half-Life 2 which is probably one of the best first person shooters ever you will also get Half Life 2 episode 1 and Half-Life 2 Episode 2 which is a bunch of excellent expansions for an excellent game, Team Fortress 2 which is quite easy to get into but hard to master, Portal which is an amazing puzzle game. Why am i saying that you should get a good PC? Well the PS3 port of The Orange Box is terrible.

Too late? That doesn't even make sense. Just pick up a game you find interesting and start playing.

Seriously, Just play loads of offline FPS games first, get used to manovering around a game from 1st person perspective.

When your confident, load up Black Ops, but dont head strait into online multiplayer, train with the AI bots.

Spend about a week intotal training agains the AI, every few days, put their skill up.
Mess around, play games with AI teammates, play games completely alone against a team of 9.

Once you can hands down beat 9 normal-hardened AI bots on your own, you know your ready.

Trust me, playing with those bots, at times can be harder than online. If you get good at that, then online will be a piss whip.

You're welcome.

But we need more boss fights like that on in our modern games.

Play single player at least on normal difficulty. If you're feeling confident, bump up the difficulty.

The skills you learn should help you anytime in multiplayer, and with the game.

So, here are the basic rules to all FPSs:

-Stay near teammates (unless it's a free-for-all deathmatch, obviously)
-Don't use grenades unless you're completely confident in them
-Reload. A lot.
-Switch to a secondary weapon in tight situations
-Close quarters is good to start with: weapons are usually faster at reloading and don't require much accuracy.

I mean, lots of my friends are playing CoD:BlOps like its needed for their survival, and I haven't really liked FPS games that much but have got into them recently. My problem is that if I go into FPS games now and start to go online, they'll have literally years of experience in playing online and I'll have a KDR of 0.1:10000 or something ridiculous.

Should I start off playing and risk being embarrassed by how much I suck, or should I just sit at the sidelines?
If you think I should go into them, could you recommend one to get me started?
*I'm a PlayStation 3 owner only, so don't call Halo or Gears, I won't be able to play them*
Mainly what they have, is knowledge of the weapons and maps. When you learn that, and you learn the general flow of the online community, you can work with that and play better. At first, you won't know how anyone plays, or the little nuances of the weapons and maps and stuff. Once you learn that, though, you're set. I got into Counterstrike Source recently, and I had always played it with friends, but never online. When I first got into it for real, playing online, I was getting steam rolled, but don't let that discourage you, just start playing with the intentions of learning the game and you should be fine. I recently bought Team Fortress 2, which I'm super late in the game for, but if I just approach it trying to learn first, and then trying to improve my game, I think I can get pretty good at it.

Get black ops and play with the bots in combat training.

To be honest though, just get into matches and play. So what if you get one kill and 30 odd deaths? After a few matches you start to see it get better and better, it's taken me 7/8 months to become average on PS3 and thats being in the same place you are now.

I started with MW2, 7/8 months ago and I still have dire games 6 kills to 25 or so deaths (shut up, I was spawned camped for most of it!) and other times I get a stunning (to me) scores (31 kills no deaths).

Black ops forces you to play TDM when you first start online, which is harsh 'cos dying effects the score so if you suck the team cares.

On things, like demolition or domination, other players will only laugh at you but you can't hear them so who cares?

Could always play resistace 2 on co-op and kill bots with random people.
This is pretty much what I'd say, thankfully it gives me an excuse to use the image I just made.

Don't worry about the KDR. Choose a game (I'd recommend CoD4 for single/mulitplayer and BlOps for multiplayer) and launch into it. You may suck at first, but you'll get the hang of it sooner or later.

If you do end up picking up an FPS, feel free to look me up--I'd be happy to help you figure stuff out and play in matches with you if I happen to have the game that you settle on.

Get the TimeSplitters series on PS2. No dealing with fanboys, and you'll be totally retro.

Play older fps's offline with bots or friends.

Or play Team Fortress 2, the game where even a crushing defeat can still be fun!

Dude, this is just a game, not some holy epic quest. Loosen up and have fun discovering new types of games. FPS', when done well, are great, like Black Ops. Jump in, learn and grow, and you'll eventually be kicking butt and smiling to yourself with all the online whiners out there cursing you. Good times.

find a used copy of the orange box and play some portal and halflife2 ... you'll get the hang of things from there. the problem with jumping into games like that is even if you're a seasoned vet, people are almost always better than you (i suppose if you're the best, then someone is almost at par with you).

if this is the only method of interaction between you and said friends, then yes ... it's what I do. otherwise, just hang out with people and comment on kills. hopefully they can play and talk because that shit gets boring fast ... also suggest to tag along in multiplayer (one of the many beauties of codblops) or play zombies.

just jump into a game you like and start playing. force your self to play it for a minimum of 10 hours. in that time you should have gotten some upgrades and learnt the basics of the maps.

stop being a girl and just play the game. does it matter if your embarrassed online? dont play with your friends at first.
