Is it worth becoming a Vampire on "Oblivion"?

When I accidentally got vampire'd in my first game of Oblivion, it only became relevantly beneficial once, when I was stuck in a spot for some reason, but until I moved I was safe. So, I waited a few days until I was at Maximum Vampire, at which point I was able to defeat the thing-I-do-not-remember. (It could've just been encumbrance for all I know.)

And yes, it does severely limit fast-travel, but if you have the presence of mind to use Alchemy (the best skill in the game,) you should have a decent number of Restore Health potions on you, so it never becomes an issue.

So ultimately, I might recommend it if you're going to do the Dark Brotherhood quests anyway, because the cure quest is fairly interesting, as far as fetch-quests go. But if you get vampire'd accidentally, it changes the gameplay just enough so that you could easily find it annoying after a while.

On the plus side, all those hobos were finally good for something. :)

NOOOO! Don't do it! It sounds cool for sure, but give it a few days of Oblivion time and it'll be a pain in your arse until you finally manage to get the cure.

No, not really. It would've been a lot more fun if you could attack people to feed instead of having to find someone whose sleeping.

Ladies and gentlemen, every part of Oblivion in a nutshell.
There's always one of these stupid posts on every thread, no matter the game. Congrats on being 'that guy'.

OT:

I don't think it's worth it, as everyone will hate you and it's very hard to get changed back once it happens.

After experiencing Morrowind vampirism with Vampire Embrace, Vampiric Hunger and Vampire Realism mods, vampirism in Oblivion was a joke.

Alright; I got a warning for posting something that doesn't 'stimulate discussion'.
I'll try to make it right, since I can't edit my first post.

Being a vampire in Oblivion has many drawbacks;
- You need to feed every now and then, and if you're seen feeding you get done for assault.
- Your Vampire more often than not will become very ugly as well, unless you're lucky with your facial design in which case they can become very attractive. Mods can fix this if you know how to install them. You are using a PC, non?
- The vampire stat-boosts are fleeting. You need to keep in tip-top shape (0% Vampirism) to retain the full advantage, but that will almost have expired by the time you get to whatever dungeon, or ruin, you've wandered into and hope to raid.
- For the most part NPCs will be very unhelpful if you're a vampire.
- There is no extra content for vampires, save for the cure for vampirism quest. The DLC, Vile Lair, caters to Vampires, but that is a DLC. It seems a little unnecessary to pay to get one extra area where you can feed on human cattle without fear of being caught.
- Unless you feed you can't walk in the sun. Newly fed you can enjoy about 20 minutes in the sun.

The Upside of being a vampire are;
- A Stat-boost that will gradually get weaker.

As you can see, the cons far outweigh the pros. Don't do it. O_O
Being a vampire is helpful if you're in the Dark Brotherhood. They don't care if you're a vampire. The Thieves Guild will hate you unless you're at 0% Vampirism. The sneak bonus helps for both factions. Purely combat-wise, being a vampire is not advisable. Some enemies use Silver weapons which will hurt you. a lot

the should have made it so that fast travel takes longer but you end up in your destination after dark.

but the advantages seem so small. what is it fire vunrability, detect life and increased strength?

It is if you're finding the game so hard you actually NEED to use the bonuses, but frankly the game is so damn easy that you're better off not having to put up with the crap. This is 9000% more true on morrowind.

plus, there's no cure.

it sucks, just like Oblivion does with its "up its own ass" mechanics and stat building.
there is a cure although its hard to get

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Vampire_Cure
well that's really inconvenient... and the game never tells you that.

that's really the problem with oblivion. it's so up its own ass that if you're not up there with it, then you'll be ridiculed by those who are and feel like an idiot.

that doesn't make for a good game

you can also get the Vile Lair official DLC where you can cure yourself, but once cured you can never go back

If you have the game of the year edition go for it if the idea interests you. One of the extra houses you get has a ritual pool that allows you to cure it pretty easily.

The only thing i would warn you about is to research the cure first.
Also don't listen to everyone going on about the quest, thats only for vanilla oblivion.

And finally if you keep fed on blood from sleeping people you can go out in the sun without burning and you can fast travel fine.

It does, its a rpg not a fps there is no big objective but after you become a vampire the "Cure vampirism" talk option is open with any healer or priest.

It introduces a completely different way of playing the game. In my opinion if you want to try being a vampire, create a new character specifically designed for being one. I personally liked trying it once, for my dark brotherhood character, but it does severely limit your playing style.

I became one to see how it was. Truth be told it really wasn't as bad as I expected... to begin with.

I suggest you read up on it [http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Vampirism] before making your decision. To be honest, it did come in really handy at times, but the general lack of support for vampires (eg quests, alliances) had me looking for the cure.

I actually found the curing quest pretty engaging though, so if you don't like it, you can still get some fun out of fixing it.

I'm afraid it's actually the opposite, the only weakness to come from not drinking is that to sunlight (and maybe silver). All your powers and strengths actually get stronger the longer you go without blood.

My first playthrough I did without guides and what not so the fact that I was turned surprised me and i was really excited then on the third day i was fast travelling and the sun came out. Nothing like being stuck in a field far away from everything running in circles on fire to make you lose your love of being a vampire.

Ooops. Thanks for reminding me. Still; weakness to 50% of a game-day and weakness to certain weapons is still daunting.

The first time I got infected with the vampire illness I was like, "ah cool I can be a vampire bad ass now"

After playing around as a vamp I got the cure and vowed to never do it again.

The second time one of my characters got infected I was like, "Ah shit where is the cure disease potion?"

Don't do it if you value your character.
