Is it worth getting a Ps3 at this point?

The only way it wouldn't be worth it is if you intend to go and buy a PS4 at or near launch, I have no real arbitrary figure but lets say within 12 months. If you are it might be better to wait and put the money towards the PS4 or some games for your PS4, I think many of the "classic" games will get a PS4 remake anyway. Many of the PS2 classics got HD re-releases, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus/ICO, the Metal Gear games, The Killzone trilogy and many more all got released for the PS3. They definitely will get released again when Gaikai gets sorted out in more countries but I would imagine they will remake games like Heavy Rain based on how many PS2 era games got PS3 releases. As for any new games that you might get for a PS3 that have both a PS3 and PS4 launch Sony announced an "upgrade plan" that will allow people that buy certain PS3 games that also have a PS4 release to get the PS4 version for a "significantly discounted" price to help people transition over.

Its not like a PS3 will go to waste if you go that route, its a BD player and a streaming box too so you can stuff it another room in the house to use as a netflix box or to watch movies.

I can say from first hand that it is worth it.

A month ago I bought myself a PS3, I actually bought one used, because I wanted a fat version with the PS2 hardware that's modded so that I could play PS2 stuff on it too, natively (found a couple of people willing to part with their PS2 games for really cheap nearby). I'm not planning on playing online ever so I have no regrets about CFW. I've changed the thermal paste to something that is of a higher performance and installed a fan control homebrew app on it so it doesn't off itself by overheating ever (the fat ones had some cooling problems and I'm not willing to risk it).

At first I was skeptical, if it really was worth it, but when I plugged it in to a HDTV and booted up The Last of Us, everything changed. So far I've played through the Uncharted series (it's a bit weird and needs a bit of getting used to, but awesome if you like that sort of thing) and Heavy Rain. God of War series is next. And GTAV.

If you buy a PS3 and are afraid of the hardware problems, go for the new, slim models.
If you are really interested in the first party games, go buy it.

It is worth it in these cases, otherwise if you only want to play the console exclusives, go for the Xbox 360, since most console games are developed with that in mind primarily, then ported to the PS and PC. The reason for this being that first party devs go for that extra mile of actually utilizing the hardware and making it outperform itself. (for example, using the Cell, to augment the GPU, that's a bit slower than the Xbox's).

With PS4 being what like, a month? away, PS3 will probably take a price hit around christmas or new year.

Just registered (long-time reader!) to post because I was kinda in a similar position.

It is ABSOLUTELY worth it! :) I bought a launch day PS3 used that lasted me two years. The only reason it failed is because my surge protector failed when lightning struck the house taking my PS3, TV, and DirecTV box out in the process. I'm ordering the GTA V 500GB PS3 bundle myself because right now at $270 it's the best bang-for-your-buck new PS3 I could find. If you're okay with waiting the price might go down from there, but everything else I've looked at so far was in the $300 range, or in questionable used condition and still in the $250 range, so I pounced on the GTA deal.

Whatever you decide to do, I totally agree with everyone else here - if you plan on buying a PS4 at launch, I'd wait and see what they offer on the PSN store, but if you plan to hold off for awhile, then you'll be seeing some great PS3 deals soon - especially with Black Friday just a couple of months away. :)

Bought a used 160GB Slim about 2 months ago for around 120? I'd say (excluding the games that came with it from total price)

If it broke tomorrow, I'd have no qualms about buying a 2nd one. It's had a hell of a workout already
