Is it worth starting to play an MMO? And if so which one?

Lately I've felt like I would like to give an MMO a go as I've never really played one before (except for a week trial of WOW which I did enjoy for about 5 days then got bored with it)

So anyway Looking at the big ones e.g. WOW,EVE,LOTRO ect.. I think that Eve looks like a fun one for me as it reminds me of a browser based MMO I played for nearly 2 years e.g the space, trading, space battles ect. But I would mind trying any of the others as well.

So I would just like to know more from players of any MMO what the games are like to play and how easy it is to get into the game not just as someone new to that MMO but also someone who has no experience in MMO's at all.

Things I'd like to know about are: gameplay, subscription fee and the community of the game. And if you would recommend it to someone new to MMO'S. Oh and if they have a trial.

LOTRO is pretty good, and the community it has is great.

They're going free-to-play in the fall or so, so that might be something to keep in mind.

WoW is pretty much the way to go. Easy to get into, accessible to new players, and really goddamn good despite all the hate it seems to attract.

It has a trial (but said trial will really not be sufficient to get you into the "feel" iof the game - as the trial will barely get you out of the starting areas.

Once you break about lv. 25 in wow, and get into instances and have some charachter progression under your belt the game really clicks. But it can take some work to get there.

Fees are your standard 15$/mo-ish.

Community is really what you make it. General and trade chat can be a bit of a hassle in cities, but you can make some great friends and comrades by seeking out and joining aa good guild.

The game is polished, well supported, pretty, and enjoyable enough that 11 million people have sunk thousands of years of playing time into it.

It *may* be worth waiting for cataclysm though, as they'll be rebuilding all the starting zones with a more modern design philosophy, based on what they've learned since launch of vanilla.

I'd say WoW. As Matt_LRR said, it is easy to get into and really fun.
Also, I'd wait for TOR, because it is going to be crazy awesome.

free-to-play?? that usually means that the games free but everything else is not e.g. good items that you can only get from buying.

Aion wasn't too bad to play it looks pretty decent, standard $15 a month to play. I'm waiting for FF14 as well as TOR

MMO is well worth it. I'm not gonna lie, WoW is one of the biggest for a reason.... hell, I still play it. Remember there's an expansion coming out soon though, so you're gonna be updating and patching for about a day when you install it

Hmm I do like the look of TOR but I don't know how much it's gonna be. On the bright side I would be starting it the same time as everyone else so I wouldn't be starting miles behind most people.

I enjoyed Dungeons & Dragons Online(DDO). I played it with my girlfriend, who already had some D&D background(now I want into it). It's a lot different than your run of the mile MMO, there is some RP, and but the dungeons and the quests are most standard with your tabletop stuff. You have a narrator when you are searching through the dungeons there are dice rolls, checks, you can search for traps and disable them to stop something like a fire jet or poison.

I highly recommend it if you want an old school RPG feel.

Also it is free, but you can pay for specialized classes and races.

I too am thinking of trying out a MMO. I am going to wait though and see whatthe old republic looks like and what the escapist thinks of it. It has massive potential though and a good developer backing it.

WoW is a great game but I would suggest waiting for cataclysm before starting. With the expansion they're gonna revamp the whole quest system making low level quest much better than they used to be. You could also wait for The Old Republic if you've played any KOTOR game you'll probably love it.

11 million people play WOW for a reason: because it's good. Also EVE isn't exactly easy to get into, the learning curve is rather steep, and since you progress by training skills via selecting them and waiting for a timer to count down, it can take a long time for the game to really get going.

A smaller MMO that I enjoyed my time with that I think is worth taking a look at is Fallen Earth. It's unlike any MMO I've ever played. It's a post-apocalyptic MMO that does a better job of capturing what it would be like after the apocalypse than any other game I've played. A major component of the game is exploring and charting the landscape, scavenging for resources and using what you find to manufacture the things you need to survive. The world is massive and nothing besides towns are marked on your map, so you have to go out into the vast, desolate wasteland and seek out the things you need. There's combat and questing and all that, too, but the thing it really does well is that emphasis on exploration, survival and self-reliance.

It's 15 bucks a month like most MMOs, and there is a trial.

Oh yeah I forgot about GW2! It looked quite good and I hear it's a "buy the game and thats it" MMO so that saves pennys.

Well I think I'll give the WOW trial another go (if it lets me not sure if it lets you do it twice) And try to find trials of the others as well. But I agree with some of you that I should maybe see how TOR and GW2 turn out but they are still next year so maybe try them when they come out and see if I like them more than whatever one I'm playing.
