Terminator 4 is on the TV as we speak and the part where Arnie's cameo happens is on and it has me thinking. Pretty soon CGI will be able to be life-like in quality. Given the fact that 99% of dialogue in film is ADR (Dialogue replacement in booths) my question is this...

Is it wrong to use an actor to fulfill a roll they started when they were alive using CGI imagery and voice actor impersonators?

Could this lead to the revival of film greats like Abbott and Costello?

I don't see anything wrong with it, but
it may open up a whole can of worms for
fans and family of the deceased actor/actress
if said person is not portrayed how they felt
he/she should have been portrayed.

I don't think it's morally wrong, but I doubt it could be pulled off very well. If we're talking hypothetical future CGI that would look perfectly lifelike, sure, but you'd need to consult the family first.

If permission is given from the living relatives, I can't see a problem with it.

I would only complain if they were used for advertising or if they were made to do things that were completely out of character.

Why? It would be a part of the license agreement. Companies will own you even after your death.

Ha, I just finished watching it too :)

I think it would only be okay if they informed the family and gained their permission. Or, perhaps while the actor is still alive, he can sign a form to whether or not he would like to be turned into CGI. Sort of like the organ donor form. :p

The reason why we like certain actors is not for the way they look or sound, but for of the way they act. And no amount of CGI can copy an actor's personality or screen presence.

Right or wrong doesn't enter into it.

however, if an actor dies during, say, an already-written trilogy, then the only other option would be to radically rewrite it with a reason why Important McTotheplot has suddenly decided to go on holiday rather than finish the epic quest for the maguffin of the week

I agree that as long as permission is obtained from the living relatives, and they don't mess up the CGI characterisation/voiceyness, then all is shiny. Hell, if voice simulators get much better, then actually using actors in films will soon become a quaint thing done by the same kind of director that still uses anamatronics
