Is it wrong?

I've got no ethical problem with the scenario you describe, but I'd be really hesitant to do it. Not only do you risk being accused of breaking the law (a relatively slim chance) you also run the risk of downloading a copy that has a virus or other malware embedded in it (a much more likely threat).

Can't you upload games to a Steam account nowadays and play them from that?
I don't know since I've never tried it with a non-Steam game, but... yeah.

Yes, I would feel bad about it, but I payed for the damn thing, so I would have no qualms over doing it.

Nope, morally, you're fine.

Legally, not so much.
Unfortunately it is indeed true that morals rarely come into legalities (big mistake in my opinion, give me command over the laws and everything will work much. better.)

OT: Well, you bought the game, so IMHO there is nothing wrong with getting a back-up copy for free ... well, ethically speaking .... legally on the other hand ... I have no idea.

Meh, I'm more inclined towards the "Take care of yo junk" thought. I say, if you really want it, buy it again, and realize you spent money on it twice due to lack of care.

Then again, what am I saying, I beat the crap out of Halo 3 disc and then just stole my friends copy when I moved.

No its not wrong. You paid for it, you should be able to have it. Although if you got it in CD form, you should try taking it back and getting a new one first.

Seeing how the industry keeps pushing its "you don't buy the game, you buy a license to play it" agenda...

I didn't buy my PC version of Fallout 3 since I already had bought it for PS3 either.

Nope. My Kingdom Hearts copy and my PS2 DVD drive no longer work and now I play them on my PC.

Nope... I also don't find it wrong if,
A. The company is no longer profiting from said game (This does not include cases like Nintendo that still have ways they can profit from a title on the Wii)
B. It is nearly impossible or very inconvenient to acquire a legitimate copy. (I couldn't find Morrowind for PC at any local store so I downloaded it... I had the Xbox version though...)

Why, exactly, does a discussion on whether an action is right or wrong contain so much discussion on whether it is legal?

EDIT: Sorry. OT, I think that, if you've purchased a license to buy the game, you aren't exactly stealing from the makers of the game when you download it; thus, I don't think it's wrong.

Because "Lawful" and "Good" are two entirely different concepts. :3

Just make ISOs of your good games and get some virtual disk drive software. Apart from making swapping disks easier it means even if they break you can still play the games.

Screw that. Lawful or Neutral evil for the win!

EDIT: Oh, wait.

OP:

Illegal, it is. Moral qualms, you should not have.

Not me! I'm chaotically lawful. Neutrally so.

On the topic, I wouldn't call it immoral at all. The laws on the matter differ from country to country.
For instance, I own a bunch of PSX games, but I prefer to download ISO's of them to play them on an emulator, in part due to the comfort and ease it provides, but mostly because if you're a busy person, speeding through slow parts of an RPG on an emulator is a godsend.

I'm fairly sure it's legal to do so as long as you own a copy. And if I'm wrong, who gives a shit? You already bought the game.
