Is LoL's community really that bad?

After watching a load of TotalBiscuit videos, and hearing the name mentioned several times in several articles, I delved into League of Legends. Despite the stigma that seems to surround the community, I though "What the hell. It'll get me ready for DOTA 2, and I haven't played a MOBA game in ages." now, I went in cautiously, and, to my surprise, after announcing that I've never played the game before, my team were really friendly, consistently gave me advice, and, I am yet to see evidence of the horde of trolls and assholes that seemingly populate this rather fun game.

Admittedly, I seem to have become smitten with it, because it's just so damn fun, however, as I level higher, and unlock Ranked play (I'm only lvl 8), will I suddenly see what the people who play this game are really like, or is it just all sensationalism?

Yeah they are dicks. If you are new prepare for reams of insults and general slander for not instinctively being as awesome as their sad, sorry acne riddled arses. Put me off LoL after match 5.

People at low levels are generally bad anyway so it's a much better experience than the high levels. It's one problem I had with HoN, as you basically played ranked from the start. Anyway, in my own experience, it becomes progressively worse as you level up.

All internet communities are bad, especially competitive ones. People suck.

Irony? heh.

Yep. Any MOBA/DotA-like has an awful community. It's just one of those immutable laws of the universe.

This person speaks truth. The higher levels are much worse now that there's proper anti-smurf software in place. It's much less attractive to troll the lower levels now and much better to troll the higher levels in low ELO games. Unless you get really good at the game (which means investing a crap ton of time and making it pretty much priority #1 for your gaming) prepare to see ragers, feeders, leavers, AFKers and other wonderful people as you level up.

Oh just wait till you play with the "try hards" rather then people still trying to earn their summoner levels.

Ranked in particular is where all the real trolling happens, you will taste the full lol experience there ;)

I wouldn't blame it on the players, the core design of the game encourages much more people complaining about balance, as well as players leaving and such causes your wall of nice to slowly degenerate.

LOL is an amazing game and yes their player base is one of the worst, but now you have the ignore button and furthermore get a group of friends and its AMAZING. all the bad community comes with the genre sadly.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
its not so much that they are bad, for the most part, as it is that league is the sort of game where passions can run high, there are few who are really bad, mostly its just people who get too pissed off at a match, but that is what the tribunal is for, its the best meta game ever

As many other people here have already said, it gets much worse when you hit 30, i would say that every 3 games i have at least 1 afker because someone on the team has done something to offend somone else. these are usually pretty petty, and if we played well enough we could win as the game has not been decided yet, but no they have to afk and make this a 100% guaranteed loss.

The thing about LoL is that everyone is nice and friendly when you're winning or if you're losing in a really close game and the only reason your down is because of a really unfortunate ace. In any other situations, people will ***** at you or someone else on your team simply because they aren't pulling the same amount of weight as everyone else.

For example, I just got out of a game where I won. My team was friendly, nice and worked really well together. The other team however, not so much. The guy meant to be their tank, was failing pretty hard due to not having any armor leading to fights among the team. 5 minutes later, he starts intentionally feeding and fighting spreads to /all and at that point, that's where the hate caps and stays on for the rest of the game.

In short, the community's behavior is related to how well your team is currently doing.

As much as the majority of the higher levels have developed a superiority complex and have become blatant assholes, it's unfair to say everyone is like that. I have a huuuuge list of people I play with that are all really great fun and play with regularly - most of which I met in game.

For example, my 5 man premade came up against a 5 man Demacian Commando team. The match was so heated and back and forth with banter being thrown in the /all chat from both teams, that everyone added one another, and I still play with 3 of the commandos regualrly (in fact, we're trying to set up a rematch, apparently my team were the first to beat them ^^).

It depends. Like all MOBAs, the community is varied between nice and not-so-nice.

Although in my experience, LoL has a generally friendlier community than that of Dota. Not like that will change my enjoyment of the game.
