Is Man of Steel prequel "Krypton" series a good idea?

For those not aware of the fact there's a series that was announced last year with virtually no fanfare for SyFy called "Krypton" which is set to be a period piece set on Krypton 200 years in the past.

This is kind of confusing as so far DC's television series have either been pretty much all set in the same, separate universe from the movies (with Constantine made part of the CW's comic universe after the fact and talks of a potential cross over between Supergirl and one of the other CW series) or an isolated series onto themselves (Gotham).

I'm personally confused as to why anyone thought a (presumably) effects heavy prequel to a movie people felt pretty 'meh' about and was financially 'ok' would get a series spinoff that was in this form. How do you guys feel about it?

Bad idea, specially if David S. Goyer is still involved, but seriously everything about Man of Steel was awful, so fuck that, just let it die, but they won't because they are making that stupid Batman V Superman movie, ugh...

Kind of tired of prequel shows honestly. If it's like Gotham it'll be disappointing. I'd rather see a "what if" story where Earth is destroyed and infant Lex Luthor is sent to Krypton. Instead of being near immortal and indestructible like Superman on Earth, Krypton's sun renders Luthor perpetually ill but boosts his cognitive abilities to the point of telepathy. Kal El could be the villain too.

I'm not into DC Comics, is this already a thing?

Seems like it might potentially be not worthless. But I'm not holding my super-breath.

Depends on the budget, and I don't think it'll have a big budget.

That said I do like the idea of it. I've always wanted to see a show based on an alien world without any humans, and Krypton comes with a backstory already.

The problem is that Krypton's value comes from the fact that it's mostly a mystery. If you attempt to dispel that mystery then you render the entire point of the "alien from advanced world that was destroyed" moot. Especially because Kryptonians apparently had interstellar space travel down already. How are they going to explain away the idea of Kryptonians finding that yellow suns give them super powers, then having them all flock to a planet around one so they can all have super powers? Because that's probably the first thing they'd do.

Really it just seems dumb, dumb dumb dumb. This is one of the reasons that DC basically subsists off nostalgia anymore, because the stories they have are too unrelatable, and too fantastical to suspend disbelief for anymore. It's like with Nintendo, they're played out anymore and no one wants to admit it because of the nostalgia.

The thing is, it will probably look downgraded or less cgi compared to what we saw bits of it at the star of the film. Still it suppose to set 200 years so I guess it could be ok.
Still what could it be about? The golden age when they explored others planets or the downfall when they start to run out of natural resources?

I'd be on board with the idea. Krypton in the beginning of Man of Steel seemed to be going through what could almost be a climax of an entirely separate movie, and there seemed to be a lot that could be expanded upon, but 200 years in the past? Isn't Krypton pretty much entirely characterized by 1. being the birth planet of Superman and 2. having been destroyed? Giving more lore to a world that's defined by it having already been destroyed in the comics, movies and more seems a bit like backwards logic to me.

OK now you are just exagerrating the "badness" of Man of Steel and even the potential "badness" of the upcoming DC movies.

I mean there are worse Superman things then Man of Steel.

Not really, that's just your opinion, for me it's genuinely that bad because it's a complete bastardization of the characters and a shit adaptation, so not it is really that bad, at least as far as I'm concerned and David S. Goyer did a shit job of writing a dark Superman story.

Eh, I really can't see this working out too well. I get that they are probably high on the idea that because "Gotham" has been successful, they could cash in on something similar, it just has too many differences.

-We don't get to see Superman as a boy growing up, since he gets shot off Krypton as a baby.
-Gotham has the benefit of being able to allude to lots of future villains, but what future villains could they allude to in a show that takes place entirely on Krypton (and bear in mind, I'm not a Superman expert)? Zod (and his cronies) and Doomsday are the only ones I can think of.
-Even if they decided to go off planet and go down the "Man of Steel" route (with the Kryptonians colonizing and inhabiting multiple different worlds) that would require a huge budget and lot of special effects. SyFy isn't exactly known for having tons of money to throw around.

Eh, I'm all for it, provided that first and foremost it's focused on being a good TV series in its own right.

Also think this would be better served as a science fantasy rather than science fiction series, but that's semantics.

And in other news, it's still cool to hate on DC and Man of Steel because...reasons. 0_0

I don't mean to be a stirrer of brouhahas and the like, but I've not really liked a single superhero movie since the first Spiderman, and I did watch Man of Steel on the big screen, and considering the lukewarm reaction that movie received I'm not sure there is any justification in the entire universe for a trilogy.

Nay, alas, tis but a money grab. And a boring one at that, I expect...

It is about a good idea as most prequels, specifically the prequel trilogy for Star Wars. I mean, the scene in Attack of the Clones, where Anakin, Padme and Obi-Wan are trapped in the arena, is a prime bad example. Anakin hasn't become Darth Vader yet, so he will live. Obi-Wan hasn't become old, so he lives. Padme gives birth to Luke and Leia, so she is safe to. It made what could've been really tense, an excuse to parade monsters around before the rescue arrives.

There is NO real tension to the story. Krypton goes boom, Jor-El send Kal-El off the planet to save his life. So if Jor-El is the main character the story is a forgone conclusion, unless they pull a 'Shyamalan' and say that Krypton didn't explode.

While I have never been a huge fan of Superman,, nor have I seen Man of Steel, I personally think Krypton is just DC trying to generate hype for the BS movie, I mean B versus S, plus WW, featuring cameos for A, C and some other JL members.

This is the kind of topic where its annoying that you cant just answer with a single word on the escapist...

Noooooo!

Nobody gives a shit about Supermans lore without Superman in it. Its like Gotham, who cares about A Batman show thats not about Batman?

I don't believe that particular storyline has ever been done, but there have been multiple instances of alternate Earths/Timelines where Luthor was a hero and Supes a villain.
First one that comes to mind is the 'Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths' animated movie, but there have been others.

Bastardization? Superman has went through some many portrayals and in the hands of different writers that David S Goyer's version is just one of many interpretations.

Not surprising since we are dealing with a character that is almost 100 years old.

When I look at the trailer of Batman v Superman I thought the idea of Superman willingly go to trial against him is something Superman would do if he is accused of something.
