Mario's not dead: It's just that every Mario game is a different Dimension. In some Dimensions, Mario is from Brooklyn who finds the Mario Land; in others, he's a native of the place. That's the most logical explanation to me, at least since Galaxy got a sequel.

I've always subscribed to the theory that the princess lets Bowser kidnap her all the time, and Mario plays along because it's like some kind of twisted fantasy role-play between them and it's the only way they can get turned on.

Also, Bowser gets some of that as part of the deal.

You make a fun albeit farfetched read. The only reason a franchise repeats its formula is because it sells hard. No convoluted hidden message about it. The "beyond hell valley" people add a creepy touch but I don't think it goes beyond that.

And yet again...

Interesting theory, guys. I'd just like to see what happens when he, uh, dies in that world. What happens then?

Double necro, actually. The first time it got necro'd, a little over half a year ago, nobody bit.

OT I suppose: I always chalked the "same boring story" up to Nintendo not bothering to actually put a more complicated story to Mario. Not that it really needs one, anyway. Gotta agree that "more complicated story" is where Sonic started going downhill, because Sega and Sonic Team rival Capcom with their standard of writing. Maybe the same is true of Nintendo. After all, it's not like Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, or any of their other franchises ever had complex, in-depth stories either. The first time Metroid got a deep story was when it was handed off to another developer.

that's....actually pretty creepy. but i doubt it goes beyond a few devs just throwing it in for the hell of it, hoping people like us would overthink in this kinda context. i wouldn't worry.

on a side note: there is a windows excel 95 creepypasta.

i wish i was kidding.

My brother told me, he will give me 100 Euros if Nintendo releases a statement confirming this theory, haha. Probably not, but it was fun nonetheless.
if mario was on another system besides Nintendo we would have seen a darker gritty reboot by now.i imagine in that game mario would indeed be in a coma or dead and haunted by his fear/memories of not being able to save peach. in the end mario would face bowser after killing countless turtles and innocent mushrooms and the question would be raised. do you feel like a hero now?
the game would be called super mario ops: the line

Here's my theory:

It's Nintendo. You're looking too hard into things.
This. Anyone remember the days where games weren't analyzed like a bloody English Assignment?
Why can't they be?

In Mario's case, it's because it's a simple 2D or 3D (depending on which Mario game you choose) platformer. I know gamers these days want everything to be artsy and incredibly deep and shit, that doesn't mean every game has to be.
Oh ok, I thought you were just being a dick to that guy for no reason. Context skill -1.

Necro'd.
Thought this thread looked old...

Either way, it's over-analysis, and an amusing if obviously silly theory (similar to the silliness of the "Squall is Dead" theory).

I understand, it's innocent grasping at straws at best and borderline pretentious at worst. I seriously just thought you were trolling, don't ask how I thought that, I was tired or something, but I now know you were not.

HOWEVERRRRR, Nintendo has a habit of using duality and light side/dark side as a big part of their games. Dark Samus, Wario/Walugi, Dark Link, etc. It brings me back to The Escapists own EmceeProhpit, who did an in interesting video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAIfyLBgCM0] on the subject, that brought up some very good evidence.

If you want to be realistic though, Nintendo did it because they are cheap, lazy whores whose last drop of creativity has been rung out and left some time ago, and now just re-use assets and ideas like mofo. But still, you can hope they were actually trying to be clever.

I prefer the theory that the whole Princess kidnapping is just staged. And everyone is in on it. There's some pretty strong evidence suggesting that that's the case for at least a couple of the Mario games, and it kinda explains why Bowser gets still invited to all those sport events and the occasional board-game.

The whole coma thing. Meh. Not really feeling it. But it is an interesting theory if nothing else.

This is assuming a level of realism that was never Nintendo's intent. It makes for great fanfiction...
