Is Microsoft security essentials a good virus virus protection software?

If not are there any good free virus protection software I can get from Microsoft?

MSE is good in some ways but not so much in others. It's pretty lightweight, unobtrusive, easy to use, has good real-time protection and is very capable of removing infections. The only area where it falls flat somewhat is the rate at which it's virus definitions are updated. It's not that they're slow, more that they're a bit slower than most of the other big providers. That being said, there are only two security suites that I'd ever recommend and it's one of them (the other being ZoneAlarm).
