Some One told me Minecraft was getting a update soon and I realized I had not heard someone talk about Minecraft in a long time. Is it as popular as it once was?

Interest has definitely decreased steadily since the game was officially "released". Although this latest update seems to be rather large so perhaps it will get people interested again.

My interest died out for the game a long time ago.

Too many half-arsed mechanics have been implemented and the whole thing just feels like a mess.

Same here. I just haven't had the inspired sense as when I got it. Also, the updates killed one of my favorite builds, and I haven't gone back.

By the way, did I happen to cause a change in your signature recently? ;)

Well the hype is certainly gone but the crowd of players is staying up there, which is quite odd considering the absurd asking price these days.

I was pretty obsessed with it for two weeks, then three more playing around with mods but with every update most of the mods broke so I gave up, I've heard 1.7 is the best version to have for proper world generation and working mods but I have been down this road one too many times.
Fix your game is not the game I want to play.

I find i play it less now, that said, I played it too much initially. so if anything, I've settled into a healthy, non-obsessive rhythm with the game.

I suppose the big hype is over, but it´s still immensly popular, and still played by millions of people every now and then.
The main interest of alot of players now lies with mods, and adventure maps.
And of course the Youtube video´s still get a lot of attention, every Yogscast or Captainsparklez episode gets millions of views.
Personally, it was Youtube videos that got me interested into the game, i believe it was Seananners´ playthrough who got me going

Nope. Notch's decline from working on the game, the general sluggish output of the updates, the way how the game still hasn't released a reliable modding platform, and it just doesn't have that 'new' smell to it.

I still play Minecraft a lot, just sayin'.

I can't stand it now. I wad looking forward to 1.8, but the new world generator sucks balls. It's too flat now, and the mountain biomes aren't cool because they're empty and were programmed to be huge and wierd.

I didn't like the adventure update and haven't played it much since. I like exploring the crazy random worlds and that update just killed that aspect and made the terrain boring. I never set out to build something, I like to explore and think to myself "what would look cool there." Not to mention minecraft does not like large worlds, if I travel between my two furthest structures it takes 10 mins on a railway and normally crashes before I reach the end.

No, its been a part of my life daily, since I learned about it. I see threads about it all the time, (or about Notch) and I visit Yogscast, Captainsparklez, and others daily on youtube to watch some minecraft shenanigans.

Love the game, love whats possible with it.

The people who have no desire to be creative or imaginative will find themselves bored quickly with the game, uninstalling it after their first suit of diamond armor, claiming "there's nothing else to get now", completely missing the point of the game.

Sandbox - the best genre!
