Is Modern War games the new WWII?

So, we all know that there are about a bazillion WWII games in the world. However, I have a feeling this is going to change soon...

With Call of Duty at the head, a lot of formerly WWII franchises have begun setting themselves in the modern age, and staying there - Medal of Honor was recently announced to be moving, and Battlefield, although it did move its time periods frequently before, has now begun making more games set today with the Bad Company series.

So, its looking to me like Modern Warfare is going to be just as over saturated as WWII pretty soon - do you think this is the case? Do you think other WWII franchises like Brothers in Arms will start switching soon too?

Battlefield started before Call of Duty, Battlefield 2 for example, but yes, i reckon most games are following the current fad which seems to be modern combat.

Yeah looks like it, but I really don't know about franchises. Like you said, modern warfare is being over used. If the franchises do change, then hopefully it will be the korean war or vietnam.

Just to let you know, Call of duty will never get boring if they continue with the modern warfare bit, because they started it. Now, Medal of Honor actually has a trailer the was played at the video game awards on spike last night, it looks decent, but nothing like Call of Duty. I think it will get old with all but the Call of Duty franchise. Just my thoughts.

Oh yes. This "war on terror", along with hypothetical scenarios (World War III in the next week) becomes pretty damn overused.

I wish people experimented more instead of blindly following the trend-setters.

i reckon BiA could possibly work in vietnam
but in the future- i mean now, theres so much weaponry that can smash cover, making it for the most part useless. and cover is 90% of the point of BiA, apart from seeing who will die next

Modern warfare is the new WWII.

OT: Anyway, probably. Afganistan or Iraq might get the nod, but I kinda suspect that miscilanious wars in the present day middle east are going to end up clogging up our military shooters for some time to come.

Considering that BiA's original premise doesn't merit a shift to Modern warfare, no on that score.

In general? Yes, Modern Warfare will be the next World War II, but more historically accurate (IE: There is none). Unless you Yanks decide to take all the credit in Afghanistan.

Don't worry, in a decade you'll see a shift, probably to World War I (the Great Untouched War). At which point we get to see how America is going to justify inserting itself into... Well, pretty much ALL of the battles. Or it'll go back to World War II, and the tried-and-true bullshitting of history CoD and MoH have done so well in the past.
Rant much?

Brothers In Arms won't go there, but I still want them to finish the story. Give us some fucking closure.

I think WW2 games are done to death and although I find that period of history much more fascinating then any other, most games set there are very bad (COD and certain others excepted). HOWEVER: to give them a much needed breath of fresh air we should have more WW2 games set from the Axis point of view.

Now inveitably people will call me a Nazi for this but I'm not asking for a game where we must play Einzatgruppen and hunt down Jews in Poland. Instead it should be WW2 from a German/Japanese soldier's point of view. We could have COD7 starting in the Blitzkrieg of France with a young fresh eyed German soldier, moving onto the invasion of Russia and participating in the frozen meat grinder of Stalingrad, the retreat through Russia and culminating the campaign in the apocalyptic battle for Berlin, if done properly then this game could be one of the finest ever made.

But it won't happen so we'll have more WW2 games where the German SS DOOM TROOPERS run over wounded Americans in tanks and then get their just deserts from invunerable Yankee super soldiers and more Modern Warfare "Kill American political enemies" games.....

Now your getting it. On that note: the P90 is the new MP40, the M4A1 is the new M1A1, and nukes are the new D-day.
