There are only 2 forms of "realistic" war games.

-WW2
-Modern

So there's going to be one favouring the other. Duh.

Its not like there are that many interesting places to do war games. Besides, I dunno, making your own universe, but no studio will do THAT!

Threads like these are just the precursor to the next fad. Someone will make a game with an original take on a historical setting other than WW2/modern, gamers will buy millions of copies, and a couple years later everyone on gaming forums will be saying stuff like "is anyone else sick to death of all these _________ games?" and the cycle will begin again.

Ok i understand your point, but its better to be modern then go into the future or the past. At least there is a sense of realism in modern day games, in past War games, you could never tell if something like that did happen, but sinse we are in the present now we can pretty much tell that this or that could be possible.
Well I can pretty much gurantee the war wasn't won single handedly by bullet absorbing Americans.

It started all the way back in the days of Battlefield 1942 with the "Desert Combat" modification (most of those modders were hired onto the Battlefield 2 team, hence why the game looks a LOT like it). But yeah, this is the new WW2 - hooray, now I can play through Middle Eastern battlezones for the next two decades.

There is only so many time periods game developers can visit before it has all been done. The futuristic warfare has been done almost as much as the WWII games. I'd much rather see modern shooters than anything else. At least I know the guns and what they are capable of.

Well, Modern Warfare 2 bored the socks off me... does that mean it's part ofthe new WW2?

It probably does, now that I think about it.

No, WW2 games are getting more and more boring due to historical accuracy. You don't have to have that in a game set in the modern days. The last game who tried to portray historical war acuraccy with the iraq war got put down due to the incredible ammounts of controversy it got.

It depends what the public seems to be interested in and follows at the time, if a recent movie based in the future came out and in a space of 6 months surrounding that release a game based on the future came out then it may as well get skyrocketing sales. Look at the late 90's to 2005, look at the amount of WW11 movies that came out like saving private ryan or band of brothers and then review the amount of games based on WW11 that came out in that period.
Look, I know I'm rambling and I had a lot more to say but yes, modern war games are the new WW11 but the rule is you can't base them on real scenarios or else the widows or veterans will try to sue you.

WWII died out before CoD: WaW even came out. Hell, modern war games started coming out last gen. Doe anyone remember the SOCOM series? Any Rainbow Six games?

The only thing that's really changed is the huge WWII franchises finally changing over after CoD.
