I am halfway through Skyrim and I think it's really really fun, but I hear that Morrowind is better. I'm also thinking about buying Morrowind. So, is Morrowind better than Skyrim and why it better?
Morrowing is a game that should be universally hated, but if you play it long enough I can almost gaurentee you'll enjoy it, as far as RPGs go I'd say it has some of the best RPG elements and just the right amount of "Taking a walk in a nice forest" that people like about Elder Scrolls games.

Fair warning though, for the first few levels the difficulty curve will go straight up and maybe do a few loopty loops, save often as you're quite likely to be killed by anything.

Oranges and Apples.

They are the same series? Yeah. But they are fundamentally different.

Morrowind got stiff animations, horrible graphics, weird mechanics and annoying interface. But also got a gigantic amount of content, amazing exploring and some of the best storylines ever made.

Skyrim got much better graphics, the animations are way better, and while the interface isn't perfect for PC, it's perfectly acceptable. On the other way, the game is much more streamlined, less items, less exploration, less variety in world enviroments.

Both are great games. The difference is that Skyrim is a great game for 2011. And morrowind was a great game back in 2002. If you enjoy complex rpg, and don't care about graphics (even if you do, you can get a graphics mod overhaul mod) and ignore some major flaws(like having no hint if your attack is actually landing or if its missing), you can get stuck in Morrowind for hundreds of hours. Not even extrapolating.

If this was between Morrowind and Oblivion, I would say that Morrowind is definitely the better game. Both games are great for the same reason, having a large open world that you can explore however you want with whatever kind of character you want, but Morrowind is so much better at this, for reasons stated above. Granted, Oblivion did improve on some things from Morrowind (combat) but it never improved anything beyond the level of adequate, and ended up bringing in it's fair share of major flaws (level scaling).

Now, between Morrowind and Skyrim, I'm not so sure. Skyrim fixes most of the major flaws that Oblivion, and even Morrowind, had (a not-broken leveling system). The combat and stealth also are enjoyable, rather than tolerable.

Aside from the gameplay, there are two more major differences between Morrowind and Skyrim. The first is that Skyrim goes out of its way to make sure you're not frusterated, while Morrowind throws into the world and says "figure it out on your own!" This causes Skyrim to be far more accessible, but Morrowind far more rewarding to actually figure stuff out.

The second is that Morrowind has far more stuff to do than Skyrim. Morrowind has far more dungeons, factions, quests, and things to do. However, it could be argued that everything is higher quality in Skyrim, even though there's less of it.

Ultimately, I prefer Morrowind simply because I can stick with a character for longer without getting bored.
