This questions has been on my mind since yesterday, after watching MTV for a bit while waiting for another show I liked to come on.

Is MTV "music television" anymore? In my opinion, no. The majority of the entire network (including MTV2 and it's other extended networks) is now a realtiy tv marathon and the very chance of one finding a music video (at least a good one) is close to nil.

But that could be just because of the time we are living in. Is it because music videos have become obsolete?

Either way, I just wondered about this and I wanted to see what everybody(espeically the ones who grew up with MTV when it first came out) thinks.

MTV hasn't shown music since 2000. You're just late to find that out. Music videos are still cool, it's just that MTV now only thinks it knows what a young generation likes instead of actually asking anyone.

This, a thousand times.

This has no real discussion Value, MTV stopped being about music quite a bit ago.

I actually found that out once it started going down hill in the mid/late 90s. I just haven't really asked this question until now. But nonetheless, it's just a question.

2000? I graduated from high school in 1995 and my high school friends and I joked about "back when MTV used to play videos". Beavis and Butt-head, Half Hour Comedy Hour, The Real World, Speed Racer...MTV didn't play music except after about 2 AM.

Each time I see an advert for something on MTV I want to scream! It never even seems to be anything good, gone are the days where at least there was at least South Park on MTV, now it's just reality TV full of attention seekers. I prefer to think it doesn't exist anymore.

Nope, although they've made a good move in the right direction bringing back beavis and butthead.
I'm worried G4 is taking the same path from games. With shows like cops and cheaters littering the channel now

I did see the original release of the european/dutch version of MTV when we got cable during the early 1990s. Back then it did show a lot of clips, i guess they did that because those clips were well made with good music and decent artists made them.
These days i sometimes zap trough mtv while dodging commercials and i end up with ridicilous birthdays for insanely rich 16 year olds, pregant 16 year olds (not the rich ones), oh my god what kind of junk does he/she have in her room? programs and sometimes around 4 am, music - like it's filler material.

A better question: Is MTV even relevant?

Can't help but think how when MTV did Super Bowl halftime shows, they had a lot of aging rockers on them. And as someone already mentioned, the only time MTV shows videos is around 2 A.M. On MTV2. During a full moon.

You do bring up a good point, though. How do they get away with calling themselves Music Television? If Cartoon Network started reporting on the news, or Comedy Central started airing serious drama all day, would they still have the right to call themselves that?

I don't remember the last time I watched MTV. I'm sure it must still show some good things...

But at least you have to admit those shows were interesting to watch. Espeically Liquid Television and Cartoon Sushi. Plus they would put specific shows feature new videos and replay old ones.

EDIT: Sorry about not using the quote feature. My comp werided out on me and it accidently quoted the wrong post. Had to do it this way.

I thought they removed the Music Television part of the MTV logo a year or so ago. Maybe more. I think they are aware that they aren't doing music TV any more.

Well. Thats kinda why they said they plan to change the logo (Or have changed it or were planning too, the details are a little fuzzy right now) to a collage of their reality shows and honestly, it's a little pathetic. I guess now that the world has the Internet we don't need to watch Music Videos on TV anymore, nor do we have to sit through the stuff we hate. It is probably for the best if MTV wishes to survive.
