Modern music is music (except for rap/hip hop), just not the most creative form of music. I enjoy my music when it can't be replicated by getting a 2 year old and a synth board and telling the kid to 'Just go nuts!'

That being said I do believe a lot of these pop artists have extraordinary talent in the music, I just think their music is repetitive and dull.

Classical rock also fits into that. It's mostly 4 chord songs and some variations wherein. Sure there's some gold, but a lot of crap too.

I enjoy anything from punk to metal. Some may argue that metal is not music but it depends on who you listen to as some metal bands suck the big ones where as other metal bands have amazingly complex timings and interweaving melodies that sound amazing. I also get kicks from bach.

For me to consider something music it must be able to be performed live with people playing all of the instruments, and the singer must be able to sing without technical assistance. As a general guideline, there must be drums or some percussion instruments to keep beat, and at least one string instrument.
Stop right there, pilgrim.
You don't consider string quartets as music, per your definition.
Might want to rethink your rule.
That is why it is a GENERAL rule, in the case of string quartets it does not apply.

Oh course it's music. I really hate Lady Gaga, but I'm not going to stand on a soapbox and say she doesn't make music.

It's music, not my type of music, but still music.

Music is art. Art is subjective. Hence, music is subjective. Transition rule.

off topic here: if classic rock turned classic about 20 years ago. What will they call today's rock in the somewhat distant future?

I myself love classic rock. Hendrix, The Who, Eagles, too many more to list. The tune, the beat, the rhythm and the sounds just send goosebumps. I am, also, an avid listener of Old-school underground rap The Roots, Mos Def, Jurassic 5 etc.
But as watching television and hearing the new... New wave of music? Is that what they call it? I don't know. But you know "bands" like Lady Gaga or Ke$ha, oh God, I felt dirty just typing that. Are they MUSIC. Take that how you want it but think of it this way if you listen to them. But do you listen to them cause they are good or because other people like them?
There is also the subject of indie music (independent). I'm sure there are actual good groups but from what I've heard, it's all shit really. Please feel free to express various opinions about that as well. I just want to know whether or not if music has just gone downhill over time.
I think when you study pop music over the decades the 'song of the week' is always disposable crap more often than not.I guess thats why its called 'pop'.

To stay on topic the one main aspect of modern music that riles me,is the overt tits and arse soft porn approach most music acts seem to take these days.
No we dont need another song bout 'gettin naughty..at the party'..is all these people do is party?I mean for fucks sake do they have any other hobbies?
All this on a video of barley dressed women rubbing their tits all over some obnoxious self proclaimed cool party cock-head and you've got yourself a hit thats lapped up by teenaged girls everywhere.
I will never spend money on music written by someone proclaiming how successful they are, with women, with money, how everyone looks up to them to get the party started, and just how plain good they are at EVERTHING.
I dont think I'm better than these people, cause seriously how could anyone possibly measure up,but I have drawn the proverbial line in the sand when it comes to that 'form' of entertainment. And yes I'm fine with that.

Pop is far too hyped and full of talentless over-marketed scum thrown out by the consumer music machine. Basically Simon Cowell is a piece of satanist shit sent to destroy us all.

I could send out more hate to pop right now, but I'm on a classic rock high and I'm too optomistic. You want proof rock n' roll still lives: check out White Wizzard, Airbourne, Steel Panther. Right now I'm headbanging to Scorpions' latest, and I'm about to go out to a local club for the metal night.

There has ALWAYS been crap music. Pop music has ALWAYS been crap.

Art changes, but I can bet 99% of people on the Escapist don't listen to chart stuff.

I personally love music today. There are loads of incredible bands if you know where to look

There is always good music when you go beyond the top 40 hits.

You people have got to stop looking at mainstrea music as represantives of their genres.

Their only the most popular ones, the true talent lies with lesser known artists, not because their lesser known, but because their talented, and their creativity and experemintation wont deliver profits.

You dont know your modern metal, punk or rock then do you?
There is some that is good. Like you said when you "go beyond the top 40s hits".

However, the stuff that everyone thinks of when you say the genre is crap. When I say "punk", people don't think of amazing bands like Anti-Flag, they think of awful bands like My Chemical Romance.

When I say "metal", people don't think of Rammstein, they think of Papa Roach.

When I say "rock", people don't think of the Raconteurs, they think of the Jonas Brothers.

Pop has infected all my favorite genres. Sure, there is still some very good stuff in the genres, but it has been widely infiltrated with indescribable awfulness.

The answer to your question? http://nooooooooooooooo.com/, music is not as good now as it was back in the the eighties. I don't listen to the radio anymore, too much screaming being labeled music on the air.

Basically what i find is that most the singles that get in the charts are vile rubbish. None the less there is still good music out there, you just have to search for it.

The problem is how the media responds to this. one rubbish song plays, but they play it over and over again. now take 10,000 people. those 10,000 people will decide to hate it or like it. that will probably average to 5,000 people liking it and 5,000 people hating it, but they have heard it none the less. i cant remember the last time i heard a proper rock song on any of the radio stations that broadcast around my area. the thing is only certain songs are replayed over and over again, so more people will naturally like it as they get a wider audience, where as other songs that are never aired but are really good wont be aired, and people who may like that song wont know, becuase they never hear it, they just hear the same crap all the time and go along with it.

Thats just how i think it works, and if you read my post all the way through, whats wrong with you?

Im not familiar with the more modern punk or rock, but im 100% sure that rammstein isnt metal. Although when i say metal, i think of good modern bands like Gojira,Opeth and Meshuggah, amongst others.
Rammstein is technically called Neue Deutsche Härte (New German Hardness), but its a sub-genre of metal. Its certainly not pure metal, but it certainly isn't the crap nu metal that is so popular today.

Nu Metal hasn't been popular since forever. Hell, not even Linkin Park play it any more.

EDIT: Seeing as we're dropping examples.

Wait... There is a song named Blah Blah Blah?
Yes, actually. I bet the one I'm thinking of isn't the same one, but it's on the Pokemon 2000 soundtrack. Ridiculous.
Ke$ha's "Blah Blah Blah" is on the Pokemon 2000 soundtrack? Are we talking about the same song or am I missing something?!
[sub]sorry for the double post, any high-maintenance jerk who cares[/sub]
Actually, no, lmao. I didn't realize that Ke$ha had a song called that. The one I'm thinking of is by Dream Street, from the Pokemon 2000 movie soundtrack.

For alot of today's real talent, you have to go underground. There is still good rock on the radio, not all of it, but some of it. Even less of what's on the radio on hiphop stations passes as decent music. Go underground, where radio artists fear not venture, for fear of getting lyrically curbed stomped. /yahtzee paraphrase
