I have a friend who is interested in one piece and after seeing an amv I thought that the show looked interesting. However, I know there are hundreds of episodes and the series isn't even finished. I generally don't watch anime over seventy or so episodes because they rarely hold my attention.
I was wondering if one piece has an interesting enough story line and good enough characters to be worth hundreds of hours watching it.

also, I heard that the Dub version was really bad when held up to the sub. if this is true it will effect my willingness to watch it.

I like one piece personally. Watch the first few episodes and see if you're willing to sink your time into it.

While Black Lagoon is good, this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. >_>

There's a reason One Piece is still one of the Big 3 of Shounen Jump.

And as far as the Dub is concerned, watch the Funimation Dub. (Which you can find free on their One Piece Website), as the 4kids Dub was terrible.

It is a fun anime to watch, but it has still been going on for almost 500 episodes and I find it hard to say that any anime would be worth putting that much time into.

You'd better have plenty of time, cause there's almost 500 episodes and only roughly 200 of those have be dubbed to English.

Shounen in general, isn't worth anyones time. I've watched some of it. It never ends and it's not even good in general. If you want good characters and story, you should watch seinen.

Meh. One Piece is nice, definately. But the pacing is absolutely horrbile.

Especially along the first episodes (first two hundred that is) is a habit of episodes being redundant. Start of the Episode "We are sailing to that island" two Episodes later "We are still sailing to the island, but met funny folks along the way, who didn't affect the story at all but were worth spending thre episodes on."

I'd say: Check it out, but if you find yourself bored skip a few episodes ahead. The series has a bad habit of recapping at the beginning of every episode and foreshadowing at the end of it, making about 20% of each episode a massive time waste if you intend to watch them en block.

Its a very nice anime if you like the open sea, pirates and over the top battles. All the characters have their own likability and even the most dumbest looking one can (and will) have his/hers/its crowning moment of awesomeness. More then once!
But this is coming from a fan so my opinion is rather biased.

I say try it out. But do try to find the subbed version, in my opinion its the best way of watching it. Not only do you learn those few words Japanese but you also get the names and feelings of the characters better.

What do you have to lose if you check it out? Only a few hours of time.

Reading the series is a lot more fun because there won't be any ANY fillers or awkward cheesy prolonged moments that often tend to happen in animated versions. Read it.

Also, using the "All Mangas Reader", an addon for Chrome, you can load an entire chapter in one single page. It's hugely helpful.

You're much better off reading it. Now, it's overblown as are most popular modern manga, it really should have ended a long time ago but, despite this (as far as I'm aware) it's the only good shonen out there, it's made of pure charm and it's strong throughout. It's fun, goofy.

Maybe you should just skip a lot of episodes, I know that I gave up on one piece but I came back for the Enies Lobby arc. As long as you know that luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates are good guys you should be all right no matter we're you start.

I'm with him the 4kids dub did suck and it took out a few episodes too. So either funimation dub or subs.

I just can't take One Piece seriously, it's about pirates who die if they go into more than a few inches of seawater

Lol what?

I watched the first 20 eps or so, but the art just looks too fucked up for me to continue, and the story seems to be going nowhere fast

Read it if you want i guess...

[sub]At least it can't be worse than Bleach, scientifically speaking[/sub]

if you liked/fought your way through dragonball or some other waaaay too long anime/manga with action being right between cool and ridiculous, go for it! if you're looking for something for your brain your looking at the wrong place though ^^
you already noted that one piece is long, really really really long... as in looong

if you do not like that sort of anime/manga... well, don't watch/get it^^

Black Lagoon and My Little Pony? Sounds like complete polar oposites.
thanks for the opinion and I think I'll check out all three just to cover my bases.

First off, if you are going to watch or read it, make sure you watch the subbed ones. If you're honestly going to give a shot you have to be willing to put up with subs because dubbed is terrible. I used to watch dubbed and got up to about 100 something episodes in. Saw one subbed episode, went back and watched all 100 something again and the experience was so much better. The characters sound better, the story line makes more sense because stuff didn't need to be taken out so that western audiences wouldn't get lost, and scenes are more bloody and violent.

That said if you watch a lot of it all at once it tends to get a little bit repetative in the first few seasons where he recruites his crew. Some how every time they recruit a new member, they will verse an enemy crew who has a similar number of members with similar fighting style to them in either that or the next part in the story (eg. A swordsmen joins there crew, he fights a guy with swords. A sniper then joins their crew, 2 sagas later they're fighting a crew where one of the guy's shoots water like bullets). If you do stick with it though, the characters become very rewarding and very fleshed out with good back stories and quirks, even the little bit part characters.

Like you already said the fights are really interesting. The captains, first mates and the chefs fights especially are fun to watch because they're the strongest 3 in the crew and so their fights tend to be the most intense. The early season fights are good, but not as good. Things really get better by about episode 45, so if you can stick with it until then, it pays off.

Oh and be prepared for a lot of back story. While it helps to develope the characters and make you understand how they ended up like they are, almost every season will have 2 or 3 (in some cases more) episodes dedicated to telling a characters history. This does break pace a bit, but it helps later on.

One Piece is my favourite anime. Within arms reach I have the entire english released manga series, the entire released uncut series, and several figures. While I do love it, I know it's not everyones style of anime, so I told you what I feel are some of the irks I had with it. Hopefully I've helped.

Just to clear things up with the dub, you should avoid the 4kids dub since they had butcher everything about it. The other dub Funimation is by far the superior dub as it is more faithful toward the show.
As for watching it I say yes but only if you are fully commit to watching it like at least watch one episode per week. There no point watching it if you can't be bother to have a time to watch one episode of it. I suppose to quicken your pace is to avoid all the fillers episodes.

Not really it has the same problem all Shounen Jump's stories seem to have, bad pacing every fight seems to take five episodes to get through on fight, it's almost as bad as DragonballZ, not to mention the consent exposition.

It's a good anime. Unfortunately, it does have 494 episodes, so you'd better have a lot of free time if you hope to catch up soon. Speaking personally, I started watching when there was 400 episodes and I watched through them all. There are only a few bad episodes in my opinion, and it doesn't seem to drag on quite as much as Naruto.
