Is PE an important class?

There were 2 classes that I absolutely loved through my entire session at school. Those were A. Social Studies and B. PE. My dad had a degree in military history, and since I was completely surrounded in books talking about war from Summerian times to the War on Terror I was very knowledgeable on the subject of history. Also, since my family is military, we put a lot of emphasis on physical fitness. For all of my school days I was of healthy weight for my age, but always kept below 10% body fat. I always played a sport, but not so much it dominated my life. I was disciplined enough to keep my body in top shape at all times. I avoided junk food, I went out for morning exercises, there's a pull up bar in my room. But these days, I'm a bit concerned about the fact that PE isn't considered a serious class. It's usually pushed aside for academics, which I understand, but completely cutting it seems a bit harsh. A lot of kids don't have much of a chance to exercise, and cutting it out removes all incentive. What do you think? Is PE an important class?

I never thought much of P.E., but I lived in the country in a three story house. I stayed in shape constantly. Pudgy suburban kids might need to get poked every once in a while.

If making kids feel uncomfortable and worthless is important, then yes.
PE doesnt make kids fit. It makes the unfit feel bad. The active ones already ARE fit.
I almost did not graduate cause of fucking PE. If it has to exist fine, but education should not be limited cause of it.

PE, not so much. It's important to keep fit, but PE doesn't tend to impart the values of actually keeping fit.

It is such that HEALTH is an important class. PE would and should come after if at all.

That's what i think at least. :3

Not to mention, 1 school year (as required at my school) of running around won't do much to keep a person fit afterward. The curriculum here doesn't exactly impart a sense of wanting to keep up the work after the class is done with.

I don't do any PE classes in college because it's not relevant to my interests what I want to do when I leave college. That and I go to a stuck-up school so 'PE' involves being good enough already to join a sports team. :<

I thought it was fun. I hit too many people in the face with hockey sticks though...and kicked foreign exchange students in the knee caps when they juggled the ball playing soccer(football). Good times.

You'd do my high school's teams some good. They already suck beyond all belief. ^.^

In Australia, P.E has no outdoor recreational part of the subject. Its all about health and shit. And yeah it is important

I read this somewhere awhile ago, and am too lazy to look it up to confirm it, and it may very well not be true, buuuuuut, I heard it is important for males going through puberty because, well, boys are energetic, and its good to keep em up and moving, or else they are going to sit there and fidget.

It's important to stay fit, so that you are healthy. Doing it in P.E. can be fun, because you can be with friends. It's also basically a class for free credits. :)

True, but being fit in the class does give you a great sense of satisfaction. It makes you feel well good about yourself, how physical exertion directly translates into good grades. Sweat of your own brow=Good Grades.

It might help kids get a jump-start on exercising regularly.

Besides that, I don't see the point in it, since it sure as hell didn't motivate me to exercise more often.

Although it did get me to sweat two or three days out of the week, which is a big accomplishment considering how inactive I am.

No. "I never used anything I learned in gym class. Okay, I'm in a crowded airport, and based on what I learned in gym class, I will throw a red ball at a fat guy".

where and when did you go to school? last i knew the outdoor/sports and crap made up 80% of the class, all it was was the "jocks" picking on the rest of us under the pretense of a sport/game

NO.

I got plenty of exorcise running up and down the stairs trying to get to class on time. In PE, I got hit in the face with a tennis ball and got yelled at (by a fat coach as he just stood there)to run laps around the track field faster.

Nope. It is important to stay healthy which should be taught in Health class but it shouldn't be forced. I was fit in high school but that was because of JROTC which made it so I aced PE.
