is "playing with freinds in the same room" completley dead?

Nope. I play games with my friends all the time. For example: Civ IV and now V, GoW, Halo, and especially fighting games (Brawl DBZ games, etc.). When your friend is being a dick and keeps spamming the same attack or keeps sniping you, it's much more satisfying to actually be able to throw a couch cushion at them instead of just yelling at them over the mic, and in co-op it's better to be able to just point to a spot on the screen instead of trying to explain things. In other words, split screen is a big selling point for me.

Same room multiplayer is still around in the games that really utilize it, such as fighting games and racing games.

It's just that shooters don't do it as much anymore and shooters are all people ever talk about these days.

Not really, there has been some decline as developers has tried to force people to buy individual copies. But if you look at games that are focused on local multiplayer (smash bros for example) they tend to do pretty well.

Diminished sure, but far from dead. Heck, me and some friends meet up to do just that once a week atleast.

Even the PC gamers are in the same boat with you on this one. We have a problem with a little thing called "lan"-play getting left out more and more. Just look at starcraft 2.

It is a sad thing...

All my gamer friends live too far away. And my tiny place wouldn't fit them, anyway. The time they spend getting here, setting up, driving home? Spend it online gaming! I'll meet them for coffee in a month...or five.

Well I've just moved into a shared house, and due to not having the money for a TV license, and not caring enough to ring them up and tell them I'm not watching telly, I don't have a TV, and I didn't bring my 360.
What in god's name is a tv licence?

OT: Actually alot of my games i play in the same with my friends. Mortal Kombat, CoD, Scoot Pilgrim vs the World, Castle Crashers, Nascar 2011, Worms. Couch gaming isn't going anywhere for a while.

I've had many parties with fighting games and WarioWare enjoyed by an intoxicated crew (WarioWare is epic for after parties, especially after a rave). In my opinion in room is the only real way to enjoy a fighting game, all the trash talking and rematches get lost if the person can just disconnect (and they usually have to because they just wanted one match before work/school/whatever). Oddly enough I'm not too keen on split screen FPS (aside from co-op) because it makes screen checking common, but I do wish more developers would offer this option (I'm looking at you DICE, I love Battlefield so much, but I hate that me and my friends have to switch off when we get together to play & drink/smoke/talk about philosophy, you just loose all flow of the battle).

LAN parties still exist and laptops have made it easy for me and a group of friends to play TF2 in the same room. On consoles split screen FPS multiplay is lowering, but every single fighting game is still, play with friends in the same room. A LOT of games have been adding co-op actually. Playing with friends in the same room is long from dead. Trust me.

I find it pretty funny, multiplayer is creeping into more and more games and yet the gaming expereince has become more "solitary"...in a manner of speaking

because to be honest, aside from fighting games like mortal combat or racing games (I think) and such I really cant think of many games that allow you to play multiplayer with somone else in the same room, with another controller...it seems the only use for a second controller is charging rotation :/

its also funny that "split screen"....you know that thing we did on the N64 with golden eye...is pretty much non-existant...and yet our TV's are generally bigger than ever

OR am I wrong? my first question is are there any relitivley recent games that make use of "in the same room" multiplayer?

AND...well why? is it purley greed? (an extra console/game per person) or is there somone other cost/technicla reason?

(yeah I know this is one main point of the wii...but...well Im not a fan of the wii)
All three games in the Resistance trilogy allow for splitscreen coop
Portal 2
Borderlands

That's all I can think of.

Funnily enough, I've spent pretty much the whole weekend playing split screen with my friend on Gears of War 3. It's insanely fun, and blasting through horde with just the two of you can really get the adrenaline pumping, especially when you're in a really tricky situation. It's also fun going through the Campaign in split screen, and playing split screen online.

They're less common but they're still here. XBLA have some of the best Co-Op titles. Heck I'm sure the next 3 Halo games will have split-screen.

I only do couch coop but the lack of enough games that support it has force my friends and me to just play pc games on laptops in the same room. Which is still pretty fun.

I have no love for split screen.
Feels like my space is being encroached on.
I do enjoy multiplayer games that puts both player on the same screen though, like fighting games and top-down action games.
Still, I actually prefer having my screen and system for myself.
My preferred method of multiplayer is LAN > Online with Vent > Same screen > Split screen.
So I have no qualms about how things are at the moment.
Then again, I'm primarily a PC gamer.

Also, I feel like multiplayer is being forced into games that should not have it.
Such as Bioshock, Dead Space, and possibly even Mass Effect.
Multiplayer, especially co-op, inevitably lends itself to problems and always leads to compromises.
They should just focus on making the singleplayer experience as solid as can be.

No, but spelling is, apparently.

There are lots of amazing local co-op games, they just tend to be smaller titles rather than triple-A fare.
Try Dead Nation or Fancy pants. Both are $10 and are awesome social games.

In many countries you have to pay this license to watch TV. Most famously, in UK it's used to subsidize BBC.

To me, one of the reasons I dont play so much side by side anymore is that both I and my friends are adult now. We simply dont always have the time or ability to visit each other for hours on end. Its easier to sit down, skype and play. And tbh it works just as well. The only games I find more valuable to play side by side is fighting games. Tekken/SF and the like, and I more or less never play such games. I'd rather have the entire screen to myself and my friend on skype, than have half a screen and my friend at my side.

If I want to play with my friends, AND have them sit next to me I'll play pen and paper RPGs. And I do. As often as I can :p

Getting to the other persons house, bringing your stuff, setting up, having some kind of hard drive or profile to save your data on, local play is just really complicated. I mean it is nice to play with your friends in person, but like some other people in this thread, all my best friends have left the state in the past few years, and even the ones that didn't have to worry about jobs and other things. For the vast majority of people, local play just isnt practical for anything other than special occassions, and online play allows you to keep enjoying eachothers company without having to waste precious gas and effort to get together, and damn am I thankful for it.

Two best friends play would like a word.

But I see what you mean, these days a lot of games focus on the online component. Hardly any games support couch multiplayer.
