Since reading through Lord of the Rings for the first time (up to the last book now). I've noticed that some wording in the book mentioned that Sauron was merely a emissary or servant for some greater overlord. Was wondering what everyone else's views were on this, as Tolkien could of been working on a sequel for the Middle Earth series but passed away before he could finish or begin it.

As Dragonball Z shows, no matter how powerful, there is always someone stronger.

It was such a long time ago since I read Silmarillion, so I can't remember names.

All you need to know is that Sauron worked for the evil God. Then that god was banished from earth, and Sauron continued his evil work.

I believe that's how the story goes.

And it was never a sequel. Silmarillion is a prequel.

I never looked at it that way..... thanks, thanks for finally showing me what DBZ was all about.

OT:

I think at the time of Lord of the rings he no-longer is the minion. His boss get's killed off (from what I remember) by the elves when they first came to middle earth.

Tolkien in the Silmarillion suggested that there were gods at work in Middle Earth. Sauron could easily be a servant of a dark god who remains at large. Tom Bombadil was actually a hobbit ancestor deity :(
He was a bit tall for that wasn't he? I bet he had bloody stilts on under those stripy trousers the lying little sod.

OT, as people have said he served a higher evil. There's always another bloody rung to that evil chain, no matter who you manage to defeat.

What he said

Exept that Sauron did not work directly for the god i think there was a giant spider that was the middle man between them although I MAY be wrong.

I think of it more like Sauron was initially a minion of Morgoth but when Morgoth was overthrown Sauron rose up to take his place.

What he said
Indeed, though more a luitenant than a minion. Also, Sauron, the Balrogs and the Istari (Gandalf and friends) are/were al Maia: sort of lesser gods or angels compared to the Valar. Sauron, the Balrogs and other Maia who turned evil continuously lost power due to their corruption, while the Istari were nerfed on purpose by the Valar.

Nobody knows what Tom Bombadil is. At the very least, I believe he was there before the elves came.

All the gods created the world with music but melkor (one of the great gods) was an asshole and decided to be evil. he took a lesser god (sauron) and lot's of spirits and such (balrogs) and created evil stuff (orcs, dragons) after many many battles with the eles and gods, the great gods decided to tear his fortress apart and kill him.

Enter, Sauron. a few other lesser gods came to middle-earth (Gandalf, Radagast, Saruman and the two blue wizards of the east) and the rest is common knowledge.

Morgoth is still alive. He's trapped in the 'Void', and supposedly will come back, along with all his servants, for the Dagor Dagorath, or Battle of Battles.

Also, they destroyed more than his fortress. The entire continent it was on sank into the sea.

Final thing, the Blue Wizards were named Alatar and Pallando.

Sorry if I sound like a smartass, just thought I'd point it out.

OT: As has been mentioned a lot already, he was a minion, but as of The Lord of The Rings, he served himself.
