Is sexting really a big problem as the media makes it seem?

I'd never heard of it before I saw a news headline. I think it was probably the most interesting story they could come up with at the time and is another way to try to make texting look bad.

It's ill-advised, but the media tends to focus on and sensationalize things like this and downplay more complicated issues in order to up their ratings.

I was not aware that the mainstream media thought this was a problem.

Problem, not really. I'd definitely call it a bad idea though.

Mixing adolescents unlikely to last relationships with a good chance for "revenge" after a break-up equals a good chance that any potentially embarrassing pictures will show up in a nasty way.

I don't do it because it's retarded, if I want to say something like that to my gf then it's usually over the phone or in person. And the whole nude pic thing is dumb too my friend used to send pictures of his slong to his "friend" all the time and I honestly was disgusted by it.

I wouldn't say they're a really big problem, but I do find them funny, for they've become the new trading cards in my high school.

"Hey, I've got Jennifer, do you?"
"Nah, but I'll trade you for pics of Sarah."
"Deal."

Exchanges like that are becoming rather common, shows how stupid these girls are to send pictures like that.

A few of my friends do it, I think it's fucked up, and cell-phones are the devil's machines. Seriously though, it is a little disturbing, although not worth court time, IMO.

In my old school, a guy sent a picture of his schlong to the girl he was stalking. She then forwarded it to everybody... even the teachers. It was black and blue (obviously a sign of tough love o_O)... and it was tiny.

Yet another scarring image burned into my brain.
I...you...what?

OT: I wouldn't do it, really. I mean, yes, I'm a teenager and therefore not very responsible, but I wouldn't send pictures like that to anyone. You can't tell for sure if they'll keep it a secret or if they'll forward it around everywhere to everyone.

In this day and age, these pictures last forever.

EDIT:

No, I've sent and received these things. Sometimes you're in a relationship with someone, they're away for a while and it just sort of happens. How does that bother the media? It doesn't. I wish news organisations would focus on actual news and the challenging of authority, but they don't so... I don't regret what I did though.
It's a different story if it's a forced thing. I mean, I did this with my ex and if some dude just goes "hi, this is my penis" to some girl or vice versa, then that's not "sexting", that's sexual harrassement. Straight up.
I'm just gonna go with this. Well said sir. Have a cookie. But only in strong relationships. I remember, back in highschool, when girls would send those pictures within a week of going out with someone. Or send some to convince them to go out with them. Not that all girls did it.

Not bad if it's from a girlfriend to a boyfriend and it never goes outside the two of 'em, but if there's a breakup and the pictures get shown around school or some shit, then I could see if it's a problem.

Plus, underage pornography. (Kinda)

I don't mind it, but if a girl asked me I probably wouldn't. You can get in trouble with the police or more importantly her parents which is much scarier. So yeah, if you're horny, just have sex or something. The funny thing is you take less of a risk by doing that.

The problem with sexting is people who do so haven't watched this helpful music video about it first [http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1924598].

I think sexually explicit text between consenting people is fine and no different from writing someone a sexual letter or sending them a photo in the post (i.e same laws should apply regarding age, consent, harrassment, etc). I would never do it myself though because who knows where it could end up.
I pretty much agree with this. The media are just looking for something to latch onto. I stopped paying much attention to the news back in the 1990's when they went sensational instead of investigative.

But as for doing such a thing, I stick by the quote by Vlad Taltos in one of Steven Brust's books. "Love is like a murder, there should be no witnesses." Probably would have been invaluable advice to Paris Hilton...

Mostly it's something stupid young people will do and regret later in life should it come up again. Bu for couples I can see it as just another way of flirting and getting your partner in the mood. I'm not so sure pics are the best idea but simple sexting can be very effective if the person is talented enough with erotica already and knows the person wants them.

Moral crisis though? No. It's adapting new tech to something else people already like- sex.

I think the main problem is risque pictures, which count as child porn if you 18. And that is just a whole world of legal nasty

That and those pics can be pretty embarrasing later in life
