You should play Super Castlevania IV. Best game on the SNES, bar none.Reincarnatedwolfgod said:well I am asking because I hear it is good game and due exceptions existing to general feeling of not like platformers that much.StriderShinryu said:Shovel Knight is an excellent modern take on the classic 8 bit action platformer. It owes a lot to games like Mega Man, Ducktales and Castlevania. If by "don't like platformers" you mean you don't like modern platformers then, yes, you may enjoy Shovel Knight. If by "don't like platformers" you mean that you don't like them at all then, no, you won't like Shovel Knight.. and I'm not sure why you're even asking.
I never play any of the Mega Man game before nor have I played any of the Castlevania games. I don't see what so great about mega man from just watching it being played. Some games not interest watch but fun to play so that is not saying much.
I've bought it, but have not played it yet, but I don't think a NES controller has enough buttons. At the very least you'd need one for attack, jump, and spell. A SNES controller would probably be perfect, as that has the same number of buttons as the 3DS, which Shovel Knight is available on through the eStore.Alex Baas said:I have another question that people in this tread might be able to ask. There is an independent game store near where I live that specializes in retro gaming. Recently they just ordered in a shipment of USB NES pads used mostly for emulators. What I want to know is whether or not Shovel Knight will bind well to an NES pad. Would this be playable?
So basically you're judging a game you have never played in a genre you have absolutely no personal interest in, and you're complaining that the game doesn't fit on your personal GOTY 2014 list despite it being on other people's GOTY 2014 lists? And you're basically saying that the game only relies on nostalgia for it's appeal despite the fact that pretty much only one person in the thread has said that that's the case?omega 616 said:I've seen shovel knight on top games of the year lists. Which astounds me, how can a very generic idea with the only thing going for it being nostalgia be one of the best games of the year? Hundreds of games are released but this is top 5?elvor0 said:snip
Sure fun and play well are important but shouldn't that be all games? Candy crush plays well and millions have fun with it but like shoval knight, its been done a million times and adds nothing new but its still top 5 of the year?
Not silly at all.StriderShinryu said:So basically you're judging a game you have never played in a genre you have absolutely no personal interest in, and you're complaining that the game doesn't fit on your personal GOTY 2014 list despite it being on other people's GOTY 2014 lists? You do realize how silly that is, don't you?
I have a USB adapter for my SNES controller, and had to use JoyToKey to play Shovel Knight with it.Alex Baas said:I have another question that people in this tread might be able to ask. Thanks. You have just persuaded me to get this gameLunar Templar said:Shovel Knight is a great 2D platformer.
it's more old school Mega Man then Mario though, so keep that in mind.
To be fair, this was an awful year for gaming. Awful, awful year. Every single good game has been a 'Good game...but' case for the ones I've played.omega 616 said:I've seen shovel knight on top games of the year lists. Shovel Knight is legitimately good and everyone should at least try it, the game's super cheap anyways.omega 616 said:Ever play those old school 2d platformers? Well it's them games, fuck all special about it.
People are praising it 'cos people love nostalgia, X com, syndicate, new star wars, new jurassic park, stryder ... you get the idea. Why do you think 2d side scrollers from indies are so common? Not just 'cos they are easier to make but 'cos they sell on nostalgia.
Then again I haven't played it, so it could be amazing and im talking out of my arse. To me it looks just like Mario with more direct combat.

as for indie developers making 2D platformers I think it's more a matter of budget/time constraints than because nostalgia cash grab. Most indie developers rely on fans and their own bank accounts to fund their games. I imagine it can't be that easy to fund a high tech game with all the latest tech when most triple A games cost upwards of a million.
yeah pretty much. I like it well enough (not game of the year) but still really good and solid experience. I'm not old enough to have played to original games since my first console was the SNES so I don't really have nostalgia for 8-bit but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a cheap and good experienceomega 616 said:It's good 'cos you say so?
I think it's a little of category A and a little category 2. Cheaper and easier to make but also the nostalgia kick.
It's what I don't get, I can state why I like the games I do ... I've given 2 people the option to and the only thing I've gotten back is "well made and fun" and "really good and solid experience ... cheap and good experience".GZGoten said:yeah pretty much. and no my personal opinion should in no way or form be taken as the end all be all but it's my 2 cents. Take it or leave it you can form your own opinion on your love/hatred for the game
