Is Skyrim the herald of a new age of Dragon games?

I think in Skyrim you'll have dragon powers, including breathing fire.

So, you can pretend you're a small dragon.

OP, have you ever read the Earthsea novels? They feature intelligent dragons with their own culture and language.

I would say I'd love an Earthsea game, but that would be difficult to do well. Not a lot of combat in those books.
Yeah that's exactly what I'm thinking! I love the Earthsea novels. Even the Gore Miyazaki film wasn't that bad.
But you're right... the Earthsea novels are much more about the wonder of the strange and fantastic world and stories... not combat extensive. The Bitterwood novels are the same if you haven't read them, give em a go. I loved them.

Also, on the topic of The Elder Scrolls, I know it's stupid to talk about TESVI with V right around the corner, but I just wanted to say that when 6 does come out many years from now, I hope it is set in Black Marsh. Just sayin'.
Hate to say it but the many the cities in Black Marsh got destroyed before the evnets of skyrim and a strange flying island appeared as well.

Here's my source: http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1207439-skyrim-information-iiii/

Also I not all dragons are meant to be hostile (at least at first) so perhaps we might see the odd battle of wits and words between Dragon and Dragonborn

There's one problem though.

You can't ride any.

That's one of the biggest wasted opportunities in gaming history.
Well they did say that there would be a £500 DLC that would add dragon riding in response to comments someone made about horse armour

Huh...have you played Divine Divinity 2?

Let's hope that you can talk to them...although I doubt it. I hope it will be more than killing them but I doubt that too. What I don't doubt is that there will probably be a mod for it.

Watch the game play things from E3, it says in that dragons will be placed in the world, then left to do as they please.

There not trapped at the end of a dungeon so you have to crawl through the dungeon to get to it, like a boss. You could be walking to the next town when one flies over and starts kicking your ass.

I think dragons are stupid. I'll never understand why they're so revered, and even treated as Gods in some cases (World of Warcraft, to some extent Dragon Age) when they're nothing more than oversized lizards. Animals, essentially. I can understand why they would be feared by townsfolk who are intimidated by its size, but other than that, they're just daft animals to me. So that said, i for one hope that the dragons in Skyrim are, as you put it, just 'boss encounters with pretty backgrounds'.

Skyrim has already pretty much announced what it's going to do with dragons. They will wonder the area randomly and attack you or other things for that matter. "Random boss fights" is the description they're getting. Do you mean that what will skyrim do with dragon history and culture, I imagine not much with how long ago dragons were prevalent, but I don't know.

There's a ton of Jrpgs with dragons in the main and center.

Try Bahamut Lagoon or Legend of Dragoon for some amazing unique experiences.

Also the breath of fire series, you're basically a dragon in human form in all of them and you can go dragon-ish as you get stronger and you turn into all sorts of dragons and the story is really dragony too. It's probably exactly what you want where there's not just the normal dragons but the more smart or experienced ones.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm getting kind of tired of all fantasy being about fighting all the time, and it's nice to have the occasional break.

I am looking forward to slaying me some dragons. So often in fantasy games we get stuck fighting regular ol' humans, with trolls being the biggest thing you fight.

I'm also looking forward to dragon's dogma, which appears to be filled with tons of huge monsters to slay.

I'm not as big of a dragon fan as you, but their awesomeness is undeniable.
I would recommend the Panzer Dragoon series, but they're a little old.
You defiantly should check out http://www.divinity2.com/.

Did you never play Drakan? That was actually a pretty good game. Focused more on Rynn but Arokh was a major companion/transport/combat vehicle

I'm at least hoping the dragons in Skyrim are intelligent and are the main quest givers.
They aren't. The Elder Scrolls games are about the Elder Scrolls, in the sense that you are enacting the events foretold by them. You just don't know it because every monk reads them differently, and cannot tell anyone what they saw till after it happens. Sort of like Nostradomus. Anyway, the game is called THE ELDER SCROLLS 5: Skyrim. It's about The Elder Scrolls, and Skyrim. Dragons happen to be in it. If they ever make a game about the other continent and the Akavir (Tiger-people (not lion like Khajiit), one of which became a dragon) then you will see sentient dragons, and will be able to ride/play as one, but then you wouldn't be playing TES anymore would you?

As others have said, check out Divinity II (make sure to get the Dragon Knight Saga edition). It has everything you love. Seriously. I don't want to spoil much of the lore, but it has all of what you want. Divinity II is just one of those games I have to tell people about every chance I get... I absolutely adore the game. Plus, another Divinity game, Dragon Commander, is on its way! It's going to be turn-based strategy/RPG game where you get to play as a dragon... with a jet pack. You heard me right: a dragon WITH A MOTHERFUCKING JET PACK.

Dragons are set-pieces as well as dynamic events where the game is programmed to decide whether you fight one at any point depending on a variety of factors.

And they have hinted that some dragons will be more than just big battles. They have their own language so they're obviously more then fire-breathing idiots. But yeah, dragons won't be the "main quest givers" (...have you played TES before?).

Another +1 for Divinity 2.

Also Dragon Commander from the same developers could be interesting:
