Rather than the idea of responding to offense being the problem, I prefer to think that people's inability to understand word context (or situational context) to be a bigger problem with humanity.
Let me relate this to gaming with two examples.
1. PETA offended by whaling in AssCreed IV
As part of keeping to the time period, the AssCreed devs added whale hunting as a way to make money. PETA flipped their lid, saying that whales were an endangered species blahblahblahblah.
The context of the whaling was strictly historical, yet PETA was still offended by it because OMG WHALES ARE ENDANGERED AND YOU ARE KILLING DIGITAL WHALES RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA- It's very ridiculous.
2. People taking offense to the game titled Whore of the Orient
Again, something that contextually has historical meaning, people (I think it was someone within the Australian Government...?) didn't like it because they felt it was a slur against asians (or something). Again, the context is completely missed/ignored, and we are left with a stupid situation.
If people would just fucking stop for a minute, and look at the context that something is used, then we wouldn't waste so much of our energy making mountains out of mole hills. We'd also have easier times distinguishing things that are truly malicious in nature, to someone making an honest mistake (like tizzy's misuse of the word "tranny").
