Is St. Anger really all that bad?

I have been hearing people shit all over St. Anger since i got into Metallica in 6th grade. I just recently bought the album, and also watched the DVD where they played the songs live in the studio. It certainly isnt their best effort, but I dont think that its their worst either. at the very least I'd give it a 7.5/10. Why do people hate it so much? The lyrics are some of Metallica's best, James' voice is excellent, the riffs are quite good, and in my opinion more than make up for the lack of guitar solos. The drums are excellent, although they do sound better with Lars' snare turned on. Like on some of the live in the studio DVD. Most of the songs dont need to be as long as they are, and the production is shit, but i think those are about the only problems.

So my question is, why all the hate on this album? Whats so bad about it?

And if you didnt like Load and ReLoad I'm not sure if i even want your contribution. If you are civilized about not liking these three albums I'm fine, but please, no "These albums were sell outs." I've heard that more times then i would like to admit. And i'm sick of it.

The songs just got on my nerves. Same with Load. Hated Load. Only liked one song in Re-Load. I found most songs annoying, and if they were ok the lyrics would kill things.

I don't hate it, it's one of my favourite Metallica albums.

Also my favourite Metallica song is from ReLoad.

St. Anger was actually the first CD I ever bought, and it got me hooked on Metallica. So yeah, I think it wasn't that bad.

No, I love it. I can't actually name a bad song on there. The drum quality isnt great, but if that puts you off a great album, it's your loss.

Yes, have you heard anything pre-the black album because that is the only good stuff, further more and justice for all is only semi-listenable. It all went down here when the "written by dave mustane" credits were no longer in the liner notes

Its not bad, but its not really that good either. A resounding "meh" is all I have to say about it.

On the other hand, if the album was from any other band, it would probably be quite highly thought of (does that sentence make sense? :S) But seeing as its a Metallica album, and they're just pure awesome, it wasn't really up to what people expected.

The M.I.2. song they wrote around that time was awesome though :D

It doesn't deserve the hate it gets. But after the 'Black Album' Metallica has gone downhill alot. Yes, they have a lot of good songs on the later albums, but nothing they do has not and, most likely, will not match up to Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning.

I loathed Load, ReLoad was average at best, St. Anger was the album that has potential, which would have been realised if they took out the steel pan snare and added solos.

Edit - I loved Death Magnetic.

No, it's not that bad. It's not GOOD, but I think the reason it's hated is because people were expecting more from Metallica. (Which is weird if you consider load/reload)

The problem is that Cliff Burton was the backbone of the band and since his untimely demise the band has been going downhill. They have tried to evolve and that is just not what fans want. Load, Re-Load, and St. Anger were all attempts to do just that and many people did not like them. Especially people like myself who has grown up with them and bought their albums on cassette. We want the old Metallica. They tried to recapture the spirit with Death Magnetic, but within Cliff they are merely a shell of their former selves.

They have an opinion.

Amazing isn't it?

I like it, myself. And St Anger is probably one of my favourate songs by them.

...?
OT
St. Anger is good in itself, but its a severe quality drop from the rest of their work. But the background story behind it's good(I saw Some Kind Of Monster(wich is incentially one of the 3 songs I really like)too).

Eugh. It's called opinion. If it opens your eyes, I'll tell you now that I like the Black album. I like load/reload. I like St Anger. I like Death Magnetic. And I'm not that keen on ride the lightning.
