Was worth a laugh, that's for sure.

As for the album, its like what was mentioned before. St. Anger was supposed to be a return to form after their less than stellar Load and ReLoad albums, but instead was largely considered worse. If you judge the album on its own merits, it's a half decent album, but in comparison to their earlier works it's almost depressing.

Here's my theory,
St. Anger was a mediocre album at best. The problem is, they would not stop saying it was going to be just like their old stuff, even better. Their old stuff is arguably some of the best metal music ever created. they put St. Anger on a pedestal, and it didn't even come close to the expectations of the fans.
I bought St. Anger and Death Magnetic the day each one came out. They just can't live up to their own hype. if they don't make the comparison to their old stuff, I think the albums would be way more accepted.

In my opinion, Death Magnetic was a lot better than St. Anger. On par with the Black album, which I also liked.

Which albums by Metallica you like are really dependent on your general musical taste. If you like more groovy rock type stuff then you'll love the Black album-St. Anger output (somewhat the Death Magnetic album). If you like speed/thrash metal then you'll enjoy everything up to ...And Justice for All. This is just a general rule of thumb, folks. Personally, I prefer the older material but then I listen to a lot of heavier type bands.

I agree, Death Magnetic was a ton better than St. Anger. I do think its their second worst album, IMO.

The Black Album, Load, Re-Load and St. Anger were all too much of a departure from what made them a great band. The speed and intensity seemed too turned down. They sounded like a completely different band.

While Death Magnetic sounded like their old stuff it also sounded, to me, like they made it sound like their old stuff just to please fans, not because it was what they wanted to make. So it ended up sounded forced.

St. Anger isn't shit. Not good, but not shit. I would rate it 5.5/10. The album has problems, mainly lack of guitar solos. The songs are better than the ones on the two previous albums though, but that isn't really an achievment. Sweet Amber, Frantic and St. Anger are all good songs.

Agreed, who the hell didn't want to see a severely butthurt Dave Mustaine go into group therapy sessions with the band that kicked him out, crying about how meanies on the street would make fun of him.

I loathed Load, ReLoad was average at best, St. Anger was the album that has potential, which would have been realised if they took out the steel pan snare and added solos.

Edit - I loved Death Magnetic.
Yeah I agree with this, the potential was there, but the end result lacked quite a lot. Death Magnetic was a good improvement all round.

I guess it depends on how old you are. St Anger sounds like a shitty generic rock album. Metallica hasn't really been cool since 1996 anyways.

What, Metallica, or their fanboys?
Metallica, obviously. Did you see Some Kind of Monster?

I have been hearing people shit all over St. Anger since i got into Metallica in 6th grade. I just recently bought the album, and also watched the DVD where they played the songs live in the studio. It certainly isnt their best effort, but I dont think that its their worst either. at the very least I'd give it a 7.5/10. Why do people hate it so much? The lyrics are some of Metallica's best, James' voice is excellent, the riffs are quite good, and in my opinion more than make up for the lack of guitar solos. The drums are excellent, although they do sound better with Lars' snare turned on. Like on some of the live in the studio DVD. Most of the songs dont need to be as long as they are, and the production is shit, but i think those are about the only problems.

So my question is, why all the hate on this album? Whats so bad about it?

And if you didnt like Load and ReLoad I'm not sure if i even want your contribution. If you are civilized about not liking these three albums I'm fine, but please, no "These albums were sell outs." I've heard that more times then i would like to admit. And i'm sick of it.
I quite liked St.anger ,i preferd it to the load/reload double album thing as i found it them (load/reload)tobe really medicore IMHO and St anger had several standout tracks (All within my hands,Frantic,Some kind of monster and the title track)as for why the hate ,i think it`s because the bulk of metallica`s fans up until that point either belonged to the thrash movement or hard rock(i don`t doubt that a fair few "crossed over" genres, how many is likely to be a mystery unless someone does a census or something) . Nu-metal didn`t suit either group (also if i`m not mistaken nu-metal was nearing/past it`s peak in 2003) so many people saw the album as "selling out"because it appealed to the dominant alternative crowd of the time
