I mean, I remember some leaked alpha footage wherein you could take a ship from space and attack the ground and vice versa if they have any ships on the ground.

Should I forget about that footage? DICE hasn't been doing too well with non-buggy releases lately, and, well, it's ea. What if they do just make another battlefield but with star wars paint?

Is the game I saw in that leaked alpha footage gone by now? Did they keep it? What do you think?

That's old footage now, and the resources for that have also been scrapped. Free Radical took it with them when Battlefront 3 was cancelled.

EA and DICE's Battlefront is a completely different game.

On the one hand, it's EA Games, so there has to be at least a couple major things they're going to fuck up due to executive meddling. My best bet is an incredibly rushed and buggy release, and/or exclusive DLC maps and heroes (bonus points if DLC is required to play as Heroes).

On the other hand, we've got a Star Wars game originally inspired by Battlefield games being worked by the actual Battlefield devs. Say what you want about the terrible service associated with EA Games, but I've been playing the hell out of Battlefield 3. And considering that the original 3rd installment of Battlefront was never going to see the light of day if it weren't for EA acquiring the properties of Lucasarts, I'm willing to see potential in this.

So I'm willing to accept that this game might be a failure, but I think they might just pull this off.

I was really down on it, I kept claiming that the teaser felt too gritty for a Star Wars game. But to be honest I think I was just pre-disposed to dislike it. We don't know anything about this game, it's (theoretically*) being made by a very good developer and the developer that inspired the original.

Moreover, I think as long as the game gets a really massive feel across then just being a battlefield shooter set in the Star War universe is going to kick-ass. The big thing I want is NPCs, the Battlefield games work as fairly large and deserted because they're going after a slow and tactical technology based modern warfare vibe. But Star Wars battles are always jam packed with lasers flying around everwhere and hordes of mooks. NPCs would really help give that sense of epicness. Fighting for control points worked really well in the Battlefront games and that sort of gameplay isn't hurt by lots of NPCs. Heck maybe the players could be clone commanders and get to order their own little squad of NPCs around.

Either way, we know so little about this game. We don't even know if it's going to be set in the the time of the prequels, the original series or the episode VII stuff. As far as big scale fights go, I'd actually prefer the prequel timeline, but I imagine Disney might want it to synch up with the other Star Wars stuff they're producing. Star Wars: Rebels? That could work. I'm now holding judgement until we're a lot closer to release

*The name of an EA studio doesn't really necessarily mean much anymore. In the same way there seems to be half a dozen Bioware's nowadays, I think the DICE name has had a similar fate. EA treat DICE, Maxis and Bioware more like brand names than development studios. I would be surprised if EA had actually put the main Battlefield developers on this job

Isnt Danger Close now part of DICE too? Considering the fact that another Battlefield is on the way (the multiplayer is still being made by DICE) it kind of makes sense that one of those is being done by Danger Close

That game was made (or beingmade) by Free Radical Designs, who are now Crytek UK. You should forget about that footage entirely, Lucasarts took all the development material for that game and put it into 'storage,' if it still exists at all it's in some Disney Warehouse bin never t be seen again.

For Battlefront EA, basically look at BF4, but with Star Wars skins.

HOWEVER!

I think Battlefront will probably turn out a lot better than BF4, BF4 really seems to have really spooked EA (as 50% lower sales against BF3 in the first ten weeks might well do, plus very low player retention to the point of BF3 having more players even before it went free). Thanks to BF4 being somewhat disastrous they have built the CTE (and judging by CTE that wasn't cheap) for testing and experimenting with Frostbite to make it work better, this is going to pay forward to Battlefront and future Frostbite titles.

More importantly, EA aren't just trying to please themselves with Battlefront. Disney has the power to take away the Star Wars license at any moment it feels like if it feels EA isn't doing it's job. No doubt they will have noticed Battlefield 4's choppy launch (and The Old Republic's abysmal performance) and will be wanting to know what EA is playing at should Battlefront have yet another spectacularly bad launch and sales drop off, Disney won't be happy with watching money vanish from under their nose.

Danger Close (now DICE Los Angeles) more or less exclusively make maps and expansion content for DICE games starting with BF4. Exactly how much of BF4's expansion content they've made isn't forthcoming beyond some of the first three and all of Dragon's Teeth/Final Stand, similarly how much of Battlefront and Hardline they are making isn't known either.

Although, given the initial announcement (and oddly non commital denial afterwards) it's entirely possible that DICE LA is making almost all of Battlefront, we shall see closer to day.

So, no ground to space combat? Just another battlefield game wrapped up in star wars skin?

EA haven't released any specifics yet, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I'd imagine if you want to start getting an idea of what the next Battlefront game will look like, play Battlefield 2142 and then picture it with Star Wars skins, the Frostbite engine, and some newer game modes. Now, I'm not saying this to say that DICE will just be lazy with it. DICE isn't perfect, and I have no shortage of bad things to say about them, but they normally aren't lazy. If anything, they tend to become overly attached to their games to the point of insulting customers that complain, and from what I've read, they were passionate about doing this even before they knew they would do it. To me, that at least indicates that DICE will try their best to make this a good game.

However, this is a game that will probably be played very safe, both mechanically and in the amount of time DICE is given to work on it. Not only is EA sort of at the mercy of Disney, but they also understand that Battlefront doesn't have the same reputation as Battlefield, and both of those facts will likely convince them to not rush this particular game. They rushed Battlefield 4 because, as far as they were concerned, there was no way for it to fail and take the franchise down with it. They do not have that luxury with Battlefront at this point, and traditionally, that seems to make EA a little more cautious. The downside to this, though, is that we probably won't see a groundbreaking game, just one that looks like it could have been groundbreaking. The good news is we probably won't be getting another Battlefield 4. At worse, I'd imagine this will go the same way Battlefield 3 did as a mostly loved game if not a little disheartening to long time fans.

Of course, all of this is speculation. EA and DICE may end up surprising us for better or for worse.

Fuck it, okay. No space to ground battles. As long as space combat is in there in SOME form, I'll be fine.

And they keep the custom match mode where you could go into a conquest against a bunch of bots and have a grand old time. I'd like to see that back too.

Battelfront is most likely fucked.

Given EA's track record, I would not be surpassed if it came with mirco-tranactions, season passes, Day-one DLC, and an EXTREMELY buggy launch. However, all of this has not been confirmed. All I can say is pray that EA doesn't fuck it all up this time.

Look, its easy to see why you would be cynical about this. EA isn't exactly known for being a fair publisher, and DICE's last release was buggy.

However, seeing as nothing has been released about it yet, its too early to make a judgement. Though I am leaning toward it being a good game. It's being developed by DICE's "A" team. A little known fact, is that BF 4 was developed and released by DICE's "B" team, which may or may not account for the changes in design, and the buggy mess it became.

Besides, DICE has released shit tons of good games under EA. One bad one isn't enough to kill my enthusiasm.

Personally, I want to hope its good, but I'll wait until I see the E3 footage this month.

Battlefield 4 may have served as a message to EA that they can't dick around forever. Maybe it's failure will ensure some kind of higher quality.

Maybe it's EA and we should just assume it'll be like every other EA product. I'm with the others when I think it'll be nothing more than a Battlefield skin. Why wound't it be?

This is EA we're talking about, of course its screwed.

Either they rush it out, not bother with fixing the multiple issues with the Frostbite engine and associated online components, or simply filling full of Day One DLC, Micro-transactions and pay-walls.

They could always surprise us, but then again most EA 'surprises' were the sort you don't want to spend $100+ on.
