I'll admit that occasionally I like myself some text-speak. Mostly, I prefer to say a simple lol rather than a haha or a baha or heehee. I also use the 'XD' emoticon. Anyway, the real question is, is it ever acceptable to use text speak in real life? Explain.

Edit: Bad wording. By "real life" I meant in any instance outside of typing. Mostly just speaking out loud.

Bonus Question: Is 133t speak any better?

Wait... "in real life"? I hope you don't mean "when speaking out loud" or "on a resume" by that...

That said, I find certain uses to be fine, in moderation. Any of the "laughing" series (LOL, ROFLMAO, et cetera), is fine by me. Just no word shortcuts.

As for 13375P34|<... eh, whatever. That's actually more difficult to remember and type, so I don't much care.

Nope. If you use it in real life, it looks just ridiculous and immature. Online, it's okay, but I never use it, aside from the occasional emoticon.

Sorry, if you can write like a normal person in an essay, do it everywhere. Don't make me decipher whatever bullshit you're trying to get across to me because you're lazy.

A number of "txt speak" aren't actually txt-style speaking.

LOL and the like aren't at all.

As for shortened abbreviations and words... I never do it and I find it insulting.

I don't mind the use of emoticons to denote things like sarcasm, but leetspeak is frankly irritating and I can only excuse text speak if you're paying per letter or in a genuine hurry for something actually important. Otherwise it's kind of obnoxious. We standardised our language for a reason, people.

Sometimes I'll use "lol" or a smiley emote. :D :) XD :p
However, I won't substitute any other use of proper language with short-hand (or text-speech/-speak) and I would definitely not say a form of short-hand in real life. I've heard people say "lol" or "soz" in conversation, Hell, I've heard a guy say "ily" to his girlfriend as they departed. To me, that just feels wrong. Can't take half a second to add the extra 5 letters into your speech for you girlfriend?

I...I...I love you for that......I am going to use that next time instead typing out that whole paragraph.....

OT: The only time I use it is if I am typing out a text to someone and I want it one page but it is two pages just because of one word. Then, and only then, will I shorten a word. Usually it is to and I will shorten it to the number. That is the only time I don't get irritated by text speak. Well, not as much as I usually do at least. Don't make me decipher what you are typing. As far as leet(way too tired right now to actually type it how it is suppose to be), I can live with it but it is a pain in the arse to type it so most people don't. At least most of the people I know don't.

Outside of typing in an informal matter, I would say no.

But then again, I'm old fashioned and believe in being professional in your life, but sadly thats a dying concept. 1337 speak I find to be even worse, cause it encourages those people who like to use numbers instead of letters. Like when people like to say The Gr8 (its usually used with a pic of Alexander Ovechkin, though I have to admit, it lets us also do <url=https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/225406_221285914564330_136418019717787_928426_308924_n.jpg>this, which I find HYSTERICAL).

and although it made me lose some hope in the direction the world was heading in the sense of professionalism, I actually saw someone leave a braille message to someone else speaking in both 1337 and text. The blind girl translated it for me and told me, before I get asked.

EDIT:

I know you didnt make it, but they should really include the affect/effect rule there as well. its amazing how often that is screwed up.

I use text speak on AIM or Skype or whatever.

IRL though... I will punch you in the face if you say "lol".

Very rarely, it depends on the circumstance. I'm fine with people telling me that so and so is AFK but when people say sad face that crosses the line.
Bonus: Yes 1337 speak is better. Because it's 1337 speak.

Well if you ask me it's pretty much acceptable anywhere and the people who point out incorrect speeling, or complain that it's hrd to understand. come off to me as pedantic, overly critical and as desperate narcissists trying with all there might to show how educated and intellectual they are compared to the rest of the world.

But that's just my opinion.

I find most text speak is annoying but I use emotes and lol quite a lot. It's really frustrating to see people using it on facebook and even worse when people actually say lol. If it's readable I don't get too annoyed unless there's unnecessary capital and random numbers included.

I occasionally use some short abbreviations on my phone. Aside from that, I type everything out and spell it correctly (Unless I'm either taking the piss, or typo....or simply for some sheer lulz.). But if you mean speaking it, as in someone says 'lol' instead of laughing, I fucking hate it. Same with writing things down. Text speech is a travesty out of texting people on a phone. Even then, some things are ridiculously unreadable.

text speak is fine, when you are texting.

Anywhere else, beyond the occasional lol (which will most likely become an actual, accepted word) and you should be embarrassed.
