"Text speak" in an SMS is bad enough, to hear someone use it in real life speech ought to be a justification for homicide.

Generally I try to avoid text speaking or shortening things as much as possible in messages, unless it's with really close friends on msn, I mean, I don't even have a cell phone, I do very little actual texting.

In real life, yea, I'm known to drop the occasional lulz. But that's about it.

Has anybody ever watched arby 'n the chief?
That's why you have to be careful about using to much text speak and emoticons.

Only if you are doing it for the LOLZ. Otherwise, no, that's just plain retarded.

As for l33t-speak, I can understand it just fine, but I'd be caught dead using it.

Yeah I say words like, "LOL", or "teh" or "lulz" and smiley's like, ":D" and ":(" Mostly those sorts of things though, and never in formal writing.

I use emotes and "lol". Otherwise, no, no it is not. When someone uses text speach it seems like they are brain damaged.
what about when someone is actually texting or when playing an mmo and is in middle of a battle? because I think it is perfectly reasonable to use text language then.

To be fair abbreviations such as lol and brb have been used for years on the internet, long before this whole fad of mobile phones and people who spend all day and night texting people constantly (I'm sure their phone has actually been super-glued to their hand!) so, yeah some "text" speak is great but as for all these new ones that have been made that look like a load of random letters just chucked together.. well I don't know about the rest of you, but I have no idea what they mean!
As for l33t speak, that just reminds me of all the little kids that used to think it was cool to speak like that all the time, everywhere on the internet.. it wasn't cool, just made them look stupid!

For real world conversations, I never speak with 'netspeak' by saying LOL or ROFL. Why? Because if I'm going to laugh, then I'll freaking laugh and not just imply that laughter should be there. If it's not funny enough to actually laugh, I'll smile and say "That's just silly".

When I'm writing notes on paper and want to save space, it may kill my inner writer but I will shorten words if at all possible. When writing on a text document, however, space is unlimited so there's no need to butcher words. The same is especially true for things I expect other people to read no matter how unprofessional a setting it may be.

When it comes to writing online, I end up using a lot of emoticons because the space tends to be limited and text is a horrible medium for expressing emotions without taking up more space than is given. The only time I use abbreviations is for when something absolutely cannot wait, such as having to go afk to break up the kids when they start fighting.

I only use the word "lol" or "lulz" if I'm talking about something internet related that also involved those words. Other than that, no. If I find something funny and can't be bothered laughing, I say "hah," which is actually easier than "lol"

I don't use text speak or "l33t" on the internet either. I'm not a fan of sounding like an idiot who can't spell, a lazy git that uses acronyms for everything or an elitist prat who doesn't want anyone to be able to read his number filled "writing"

Wait... "in real life"? I hope you don't mean "when speaking out loud" or "on a resume" by that...

That said, I find certain uses to be fine, in moderation. Any of the "laughing" series (LOL, ROFLMAO, et cetera), is fine by me. Just no word shortcuts.

As for 13375P34|<... eh, whatever. That's actually more difficult to remember and type, so I don't much care.
That pic is basicly just unnessesary hate and anger.

On Topic: I see no fault with it as long as you don´t use it when you need to be srs bssnss

Also 1337-5p34k is kind of unnessesary but if someone else wants to use it then fine by me

Text speak is one of my pet hates.

Being in my 30's we didn't have it growing up so it's not something i've got used to.

The way I see it is if a person can't be arsed typing out a coherent message then I can't be arsed reading it.

The amount of people that must think i'm an ignorant bastard in games like WoW and RIFT is unreal. I used to get text speak whispers and just carry on with my day. Don't have the time of day for people too lazy to type properly.

I admit, the picture is filled with a rather greater amount of anger than I would personally use in writing such a thing... but it does cover most of the points I would in such a rant. Unfortunately, it only touches on "its" as a possessive, failing to mention "it's" as a contraction of "it is".

Still, the chatspeak section is right at the top of it. Y, R, and U as words are probably the biggest offenders on the internet... followed by 2 and 4, which are also left out of the aforementioned bile-soaked diatribe.

In the first bit of that paragraph, got quite a laugh out of how the person is bitching about people using "U" instead of "You", when he was using "&" instead of "And". Yeah, I know "&" is accepted, but still, thought it was funny.

OT: When actually speaking, I would never actually say lol or lmao, unless I am joking, but when typing, sure why not. I mean it is just a way of shortening down things, don't know why people get so worked up about it considering everyone knows what it means and it doesn't slow down reading.

Seriously, if people judge other people solely by the fact they say or type lol, or something similar, I just imagine them in my head as grumpy old men with nothing better to do with their time.
