I wasn't going to get a switch. I get my Nintendo fix from my 3DS. However, everyone keeps raving about how amazing this game is so I'm sort of curious... It may persuade me...

Is all the hype justified for those of you that have played it? Why is it any better than any other open world game like Red Dead Redemption or Final Fantasy 15?

Also, how does it compare to other 3D Zeldas like Ocarina or Wind Waker?

Note that I haven't played the game, but I have seen a lot of videos about it and a let's play or two.

BotW's world design is amazing. There is no hand holding, and you have to actually look for POI's yourself. But it's all set up in such a way that you can always find what you're looking for. The combat can be quite challenging. People mentioned it being dark soulsy. I don't agree, but I get where they're coming from with a stamina meter, enemies hurting quite a bit if you're not careful and the combat being more methodical in general than most games. There is plenty of content, with people not even having left the tutorial area after 10 hours I believe. Plenty of hidden secrets and loot and such as well, which encourages exploration.

Overall I think it's an incredible open world game, and an incredible zelda game as well.

Now the question is, are you willing and able to spend 400~450 dollars or so just to play BotW? Because you have to buy the switch, the game, a screen protector is also almost a must, and a case to take it with you would also be very useful. Plus probably 1 or 2 other things. And the console doesn't have a lot of really good games going for it yet. Though then again, maybe there are others games for it that are already out, that you like, and that aren't playable on another system.

Breath of the Wild achieves something I don't think any other open-world game ever has, and that is giving you the joy of exploration. The world is colourful and vibrant, and thanks to the 'climb everywhere' mechanic there's a lot more verticality then usual in other open-world games. The fact that you can climb anything and anywhere blows the doors off of the exploration, and it'll be hard for me to play another sandbox game where this isn't an option.

I wanted to wander around and see what was behind or at the top of a hill or mountain, not because there might be a new sword or item, but just for the sake of it. Just because I wanted to see more of the world.

The game is also jampacked with little tricks and details, like firing a flaming arrow at a bird to get a roasted chicken leg. It's a game where everyone will have their own personal war stories due to the scope of the options presented to you. It makes me think Nintendo probably had a suggestion box over at the studio, and anyone on the team that had a neat idea could write it down and throw it in.

The characters are a bit shit though, not helped by the overall bad voice acting. But the game on a whole is pretty fucking brilliant.

I beat ganon yesterday after having played all of the storyrelated parts and most of the rest, (except for the koroks, I have one sixth of those but there are insanely many).

Compared to windwaker and majora (the 3d zelda's I've played) it has better combat, brilliant exploration of the world but poor storytelling and characters.

I haven't played many open world games but I agree with Casual Shinji above. The exploration is well worth the hype. You can pretty much just walk somewhere and find beautiful, unique terrain. You can look around, see a mountain in the distance that you want to check out, climb it, find something interesting there, get another good look around and see some shrines and another interesting mountain, and repeat. The koroks which are found through tiny environmental 'puzzles' and clues really add to it as well.

As for the poor storytelling. The voice acting sucks, the dialogue sucks, the quests, including the main questlines are all far too short and uninvolved. Ganon is rather unimpressive as well, which is a shame because Windwaker ganon and skullkid where so well done. The game makes up for it with the amount of cool and fun exploration to do and because the storytelling is in part lacking because there is so little of it, it at least doesn't annoy you.

There also aren't any long and involved temples, but rather very short shrines and relatively short 'divine beasts',(15-60 minutes, depending on how well you do, I guess). You might see that as a good or a bad thing.

Overall, the game is amazing, even with its flaws. That said, a bit of a warning. The switch currently has zelda on it and basically nothing else. One or two decent smaller games like snipperclips and that snake thing that looked pretty decent but you better really like zelda.

You don't need a Switch to play Breath of the Wild and while I haven't played through it, my son has and he was only mildly impressed with it. He has played his share of open world games and he has played his share of 3D Zelda games. I would say that no game could live up to the hype of this game. Hype annoys me because if you let it, it can ruin your experience.

the hype is definitely justified. i would even say it's better than Wind Waker which is my personal favourite Zelda.

but what do i know? i'm just a Nintendo fanboy who doesn't have any valid opinions according to this forum.

for me it's definitively justify the hype. you can virtually do anything in that world. i dont know how many time i decided to do that main quest part, and ended up wandering around for hours. most of the time the game reward you for exploring. there's tons of things to do. there's 116 shrines, 900 korok seeds, 14 towers to climb, 76 side quests, 385 pictures to take to complete the compendium, 18 memory to unlock.

and when you wander around you can see wild life, there's a shit load of thing to collect to make receipes, you can see monster hunting wild life. there's the weather system, so before climbing a high mountain, be sure it will not rain soon, in the desert it's hot in the day, but cold in the night, so you have to be prepare for that. So anybody that tell you that world is empty doesnt know what they talk about.

and the game is not holding your hand. after the little tutorial, it's up to you to discover what you can do, and how things work.

the usual complains are storytelling and voice acting. yeah, the story is a little weak. but it's a zelda game, i wasnt expecting a huge story. voice acting, i cannot comment, because i play in french and the voice acting is actually quite good. the weapons durability doesnt bother me much. it's more challenging at first because when you start you dont have that many weapon slots, and the lower tier weapons break very easily, but5 after a while, you get better weapons more often, and more weapon slots. but right now my weapons are not breaking fast enough, and i have to throw away a lots of weapon because i already have a lot of good weapons.

It's a very good game. Overall the world feels nice though it does feel empty at times. The story and characters (as stated before) is cruddy which honestly definitely knocks it down a few pegs. Ganon isn't as interesting in this verse and some of the mechanics are meh so I don't think its as high up there as some might say. It's a solid game but https://youtu.be/pUqbqffYqTs?t=26s

I mean, there are more copies of Breath of the Wild for the Switch than there are actual Switch's running around, so it has something going for it.

I recommend it just from watching others play it. Just bear in mind that's all the Switch has to offer.

Yeah, a bunch of people bought a game they can't even play based on hype.

The world is excellent, but as others have said, the story leaves something to be desired, Windwaker Ganon blows BoTW Ganon out of the water, even Ocarina I would say has a stronger Ganon. The other characters aren't bad, some wonky voice acting, but otherwise they get the job done. The story doesn't hold a candle to games like Red Dead though, so don't come in expecting memorable character interactions, pretty much every character has two conversations with you then you never have a reason to talk to them again, I would even say Wind Waker has a noticeably stronger story. LoZ isn't really known for super strong story telling, and this game isn't going to change that, its closer to Link to the Past or a Link Between Worlds.

Only four pseudo-dungeons, interesting in their mechanics and graphically beautiful, but they all come off as a little samey by the end: meet present day character, have flashback, do some sort of mini task for present day person, assault divine beast to board it, get exact same instructions from relevant spirit in each dungeon, beat very samey looking boss (seriously the blight spirit designs are ok but they are the closest thing to bosses in the game and they look very similar to each other, Wind Waker and Ocarina boss fights were better), get congratulations from present day person and past spirit, get ok item that breaks quickly and is too expensive to justify repairing so I end up just displaying them in my house, rinse and repeat 3 more times. All ending in one of the most disappointingly easy Ganon fights in Zelda history, if you want a challenge you're better off restarting the game and trying to rush ganon without actually doing anything else. Hyrule castle is a fun final dungeon though, wish there were more locations like that in the game on top of the beasts.

The stamina bar is crap, flat out, its design looks low effort, its basically everything annoying about FF15's stamina bar without the option to release at the right time to automatically fill it back up. On the up side, once you upgrade it enough it becomes less annoying to deal with. It runs out way too fast when swimming and running, the bar only really works as a way to limit you from just climbing everything. weapon durability is another thing, every weapon is gone in a flash, some people like it, some hate it, but every weapon in Hyrule is basically made of cardboard, don't get attached to any weapon as its a pain in the ass to farm for specific weapons.

That out of the way, the exploration is where the game shines, with environmental puzzles galore, a solid combat system, and a glider and climbing system that let you go pretty much everywhere, the shrines might start to get old, but I worked my way through 80/120 of them before I started getting tired of them. The game doesn't hand hold either so you are left to find your own way around, with new things and items to find constantly. For all the annoyance of the weapon durability system, there are a large variety of weapons and they all feel pretty solid to use. It's also a beautiful game, and unless you've got an Nvidia shield or streamed PS games on to a PSP, will probably be the best looking handheld game you've ever played. If you like wandering around and exploring open world games, BoTW is top notch.

Whether its worth buying a switch for depends on how much money you've got to spare and what games you might be interested in, right now we've got just Zelda, in a month we'll have Mario Kart 8, probably not worth a rebuy if you played it on Wii U, but worth it if you never owned a WiiU. Splatoon in July, and after that a few months of very little. I like BoTW, but to buy a Switch just for BoTW is not something I would recommend, now, if you want BotW and can see a few games coming out this year you want, it might be worth it, if none of the games coming out this year interest you, I would probably hold off on the Switch until it either goes down in price or gets other games you are interested in.

It is indeed a very good game, that will be a strong contender for a number of GoTY awards.

Well, I'd say no just because of claims like "one of the best games ever" being thrown around. That said it's a very good game and well worth playing.

The thing about most open world games is that they're divided into two sections: faffing about doing your own thing (which includes sidequests), and a linear sequence of quests that make up the main story part of the game.

Zelda kind of throws that all out the window so it's kind of difficult to compare it to other open world games. There are only two things you are required to do to beat the game: complete the tutorial area and beat Ganon. But if you make a beeline for Ganon right from the get go you're going to get your shit rocked unless you already have a lot of experience with the game. It ends up being a game that's truly focused on exploration since basically everything you do while exploring serves to make you more prepared for the final fight. Dealing with the divine beasts weakens Ganon and gives you some new skills. Completing shrines gives you items for increasing max health and stamina. Killing stronger enemies gives you better weapons. Collecting ingredients lets you make foods that will give you temporary buffs in battle. It's one of the few games that makes just wandering around feel like it's relevant to plot.

Whether it's better than other open world games depends on your preferences. I liked the focus on exploration over story although the repetition started to wear on me towards the end.

As the Switch's launch title, it should have run at 1080 @60fps. Hear me out here, when you launch a console, the flagship title should run at the maximum of what your console can achieve. By releasing a game that barely performs better than the Wii U version, you have to ask yourself "Why buy the new thing when the old one is almost just as good?" So, I don't think the hype is justified.

I played a bit yesterday after going round a friends house who is a massive Zelda fan. I dont have enough experience with the game to give an informed opinion but I did like the art style however even with my small time with the game I have serious reservations about the combat it feels very lackluster but all zeldas have in that department its just here I fear it may outstay its welcome.

As for my friend he says its a great game although he believes it is being over praised. Seems he enjoyed exploring the world and doing the trials but did not like how little story there actually was, he also did not enjoy the weapon durability system. He did say he enjoyed how it was more challenging again.

I would say its a good game just dont expect to much from it.

not everyone gives a shit about frame rate and specs.

Some of us just want to take our home console games on the go with us.

The Wii U is just as good because it's a Wii U game first and a Switch port second and it was even gimped to put it on the Switch. The Wii U did have second screen features but they were removed so the Wii U version would not be superior. Framerate and specs are all that matter to many, it's not about fun anymore.

Nothing that is called "the best game ever" will live to its hype. Don't get me wrong; it has lots of strong points, but some of the features don't bring enough positives to compensate the frustration they cause. Technically better than FFXV but I enjoyed the later's characters more than BotW's.

As someone who hates Nintendo at the moment and believes most of their last console games are pretty crappy, BotW passed my expectations by a mile. I would own it myself if the Switch had more to offer.

From what I've seen and heard about it's story, there's nothing to it, and it's not as elegant as OoT And MM, but it looks damn good anyway.
