I miss the times of Jedi Knight 1
This sentiment compelled me to post as it's exactly what I was thinking when I read the thread title. The ability to develop your character and it literally determining the direction the story would take is something I've yet to experience in another FPS to this day (except games like Oblivion, but those are full blown RPG's and I don't think they handled the first-person sword combat as well Jedi Knight did either). The other thing I'd have to commend it for is the use of live actors for the cutscenes. Is there any other game that has done that to date? While it's really not necessary now that we have Crysis'esque graphics I found it went a long way to me buying the story and characters, which, I think, is one of the most important aspects a game developer must accomplish. The gameplay can be sublime in every way but it's the game's ability to suck you in that will differentiate it from all the others. At least nowadays.

I'm in agreement with everyone else that Perfect Dark was/is some of the best fun to be had playing video games but I can't help but feel that doing away with "linearity" is only going to prolong the state of a genre that is destined to stagnate. The consolation is that when we eventually do hit the FPS wall the developers will be so adept at putting together the game engines that they'll be forced to craft epic, disbelief suspending stories and characters to hold us over until virtual reality becomes the norm.
