is the Master Chief the only Spartan left? (Possible spoilers)

Just finished reading 'First Strike' (Halo novel set right after the first halo is destroyed and by the end, about 3 spartans (including Master Chief) survive and return to earth. I thought the game mentioned the Master Chief as the only surviving Spartan?
Any Help?

Havn't played Halo 3 yet, is it explained in the third game?

Quick search on Halopedia says no.

Chief was the only Spartan II with the MJOLNIR Mark VI Armor, but Spartans seems to be far more common.Especially Spartan III program where Super Soldiers were far cheaper but designed to be far more expendable than II's or I's.

According to Halopedia, there are currently fifteen(fourteen minus Chief) Spartans alive. Nine II's and six III's.

Two more bits of Info. Sgt Johnson survived the Flood because he had a form of cancer which screwed up his bodies electromagnetic field of something, see Halo: First Strike Novel.

Spartans can never die. They are listed as MIA or WIA. see the same novel. So no there are still hundreds of Spartans in the eye of the public

Although it is a widely held belief that Johnson was a SPARTAN-I, that had little to do with him suriving Halo and the flood. He survived the flood because he has a disease called Boren's syndrome, a disease which causes parts of the central nervous system to become disrupted, making it impossible for an infection form to make the connection to the nervous system. You get this disease from various forms of radiation common in Covenant weaponry, such as the green gas you see when you reload a carbine. In Johnson's case, he got the disease during a battle on a human colony during which he and his team used an entire crate of captured plasma grenades. As for surviving Halo, shortly before Chief blew up the ship, Johnson was spoted by an escaping Pelican pilot and was rescued.

John-117 (Master Chief's real name, since his last name was basically never recorded.) was thought to be the last Spartan II alive at the beginning of Halo because of the events told in the book Fall of Reach, which turned out to be false due to the events in First Strike, also because there is the Spartan on Earth in the Halo graphic novel. As a side note the only people to think John-117 was the last Spartan II was the crew and marines on board the Pillar of (Justice or Win IMO) Autumn, including John himself, with the exception of the one who retired. As a side note, not even the command on Earth knew if there were any Spartan II's in the area let alone alive or dead, with the exception of a few key characters who had given the order to the Spartan IIs to be in the area for a mission.

Bungie sort of messed up in my opinion. Spoiler time. Ghosts said that Spartan IIs and IIIs were on Installation 0 or The Ark, but when 117 got there in 3, there was no mention of them. So unless they got off (highly unlikely given H3's ending) they can be presumed dead. All of them. And the theory that Johnson is a Spartan I... well that's just moot now isn't it?
