His last name is Gunz. As it is logical for someone to have the same last name as there father (In Halo 2 level Armoury Master Gunz calls you son)

Although it is a widely held belief that Johnson was a SPARTAN-I, that had little to do with him suriving Halo and the flood. He survived the flood because he has a disease called Boren's syndrome, a disease which causes parts of the central nervous system to become disrupted, making it impossible for an infection form to make the connection to the nervous system.

Let me introduce you two a little thing called "Retcon" (apparently Bungie never liked the idea of Jhonson having Boren Syndrome so they redid it somewhere saying he is just that bad ass
Jhonson survived the flood by a little thing called luck as well as skill or high Midi-Cloren count IE THE FORCE.

Bungie sort of messed up in my opinion. Spoiler time. Ghosts said that Spartan IIs and IIIs were on Installation 0 or The Ark, but when 117 got there in 3, there was no mention of them. So unless they got off (highly unlikely given H3's ending) they can be presumed dead. All of them. And the theory that Johnson is a Spartan I... well that's just moot now isn't it?

Ghosts of Onyx never claimed the SPARTANs were on the Ark, they were merely on a 'shield world', a slipspace aperture about three meters in diameter that containes a self-sufficent solar system built so that the Forerunners could survive the Halo rings as well as the flood.

John is not the only spartan left. Kelly, Fred, and a few others that I can't think of right now, along with a few Spartan 3s are trapped in the dyson sphere

Haven't read the fifth novel, but as of Ghosts of Onyx, I believe three or four Spartan II's are still alive including Chief, a small number of Spartan II's, and "possibly" the single Spartan I.

The currently held belief is Sgt Johnson (da black dude) is the original Spartan, which explains how he survived flood infection and the entire Halo fiasco.
