Fallout 1/2 are classics for a reason, they are amazing games. They have aged but still hold a lot of charm. Personally, i enjoy the turn based combat over the FPSish combat mechanics of the new ones. Critical hits are far more rewarding in FO1/2 then in FO3/NV and there is nothing quite like the old mini gun. I'd say go for it, they are definitely worth 5 bucks whether you enjoy them or not. You are more likely to enjoy them if you prefer story and humour over shooting things and pretty graphics though. The generalization that people who like FO1/2 don't like FO3 and vice versa is for that reason imo, the story of FO3 was pretty awful in comparison.

If nothing else, get FO1 and dress all snazy like.

Yes, it is worth it. I know it's a style of gameplay that most people aren't used to, but it's full of wonderful humor, a great story and great characters. It's not much of a risk either, as you can get it for $3 right now [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/fallout] from GOG (same goes for Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics [http://www.gog.com/en/promo/interplay/]). That offer ends really soon, though, I think. But $3! Why not give it a shot?

But a tip: Save often.
The sale ends today, I think, the 4th. But yeah, Screw you, Steam! Get them off GOG. 1, 2 and Tactics, $3 each, totally DRM free, and a crapton of extras.

Also, yes, they're VASTLY different from FO3 and NV.

I haven't played FO3, but I have played 1, and it was awesome. The graphics are still fine; it's not one of those games that is so old it just looks like garbage now.

I don't understand why people are trashing the combat. I thought it was fine, even good. I'm not really sure how you could do turn based combat differently or better. I guess the only glaring issue was that your companions were rather adept at missing enemies and hitting you or each other instead. And lack of direct control over companions. But other than that, what was so bad about it?

Depends, do you like turn-based combat, conversation trees that don't list which ones require charisma and speech to get that extra bit of awesome and the abillity to run around as a complete moron if your character has under 4 int? You may just enjoy this game.

I have the first two Fallouts, can't stand them. Combat is terrible - it's click miss click miss click miss click miss poisoned click miss click miss click hit click miss. So utterly slow and dull. And then the dialogue system never seems to have the obvious choice of thing to say or ask. I put up with maybe two hours of each one.
It all depends on the power of the min-max. If you just run in expecting to use any old character like an amazing gun-master expect to die a lot.
