Yep, definitely. Bioshock's story was average, the setting was brilliant though.

And an example of a better story would be any Bioware game(except that Hedgehog game I suppose, but I never played it), World in Conflict, Warcraft 3 and some others I can't think of right now.

Hardly any game beats Bioshock in terms of setting though. Except maybe S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I dont think you really understand what im talking about. You explained the story which I already knew but you completely ignored the fact that untill the end his motivation is completely unknown, so assumed their is none. While playing the game I felt like the guy was just making one incredibly stupid choice after another, starting with getting in the sub to go to rapture.

Also Fontaine or Atlas`s actions where incredibly suspisious. In order to keep me interested which a good story HAS to do I need to feel that the character has some sort of motivation. Him just blindly following orders due to mind control which you dont know about isnt enough. Because of the fact that you dont know about it. If a game makes me think how retarded is this guy within the first 5 mins its not a good sign.

Once you beat the game and then take a step back it starts to make sense. But not while your playing the game, which is when it matters the most. If you dont know anything coming into the game for the first time its extremely poorly set up.

Let me ask you one more question. If you were playing the game for the very first time halfway through say and somebody asked you to explain jacks motivation for doing what he was doing. You couldnt do it because he has none, all he has is a series of incredibly stupid decisions. Now since hes being mind controlled he has an excuse for that but you dont know that at the time. So before you learn the fact he has no motivation.
Well now hold on, don't go and put words into my mouth. I don't think like you must obviously, cause if I was asked to give Jacks' motivation behind doing what he did during the course of the game halfway through, I wouldn't say nothing cause there is none. I would say survival would be at the top of the list, cause you know, BioShock is a SURVIVAL HORROR GAME. The point of it is to SURVIVE. And Rapture was a world that isn't considered to be the most pleasant place to visit (or at least when you arrive there).

Atlas, or rather Fontaine, leads you on to believe that helping him recover his "family" will give you a way out of the hellish wasteland that was once a beautiful paradise. I'd say that plenty motivation right there.

And before you start up again telling me that you simply followed orders, making one stupid decision after another, think of it through Your eyes. Put yourself in his spot. What would you do. You just crashed a plane into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, would found your way to an underwater city you never knew existed, greeted by insane superhumans who are ALWAYS trying to kill you, and the only piece of hope you have in surviving and getting the hell out is ONE GUY, who does know this world and how it works. Following him and his plans would be your best option, considering there isn't any other.

You can call it a disconnection between your actions and the plot, but once you learn that you weren't in fact controlling your actions, that disconnection isn't there, it ties the events together. The end brings about your need to know what happened to the world your are exploring, the drive that motivates your actions, even if you had no real choice, it's still the reasoning behind everything you hold.

I'd say my point is proven. The game had structure, your character DID have motivation, and the plot was expertly written. Call me out on it all you like, but it's all there, I'm sorry to hear you don't see it like the rest of us do.

....yeah! Bioshocks wasn't any good at all. The best story ever made in a video game is Super Paper Mario's!

Bioshocks story didn't really "Grab" me. Much preferred Mass Effect or Modern Warfare(1)'s.

I'd say the original Deus Ex is probably a better story. I also must say BioShock loses points with me when it has the same plot twists as System Shock 2.

There's toooonnss better than Bioshock! Bioshock just had a great setting and a clever twist but there's no way that makes it the best story, it's just above average.

No offense but there's a strong sense of fanboyism coming from OP. I've been guilty of doing the same before though ^_^

Even Portal had a better story and that was like 2 hours long ;D Sadly it was a bit too good and gained meme status though.

YES.

I'm thinking the Path. And Korsakovia. Yes, I am an insufferable Korsakovia fanboy, as may start to become apparent by me mentioning it in EVERY SINGLE COMMENT I WRITE.

Bioshock has an excellent story, but my favorite would be the Halo stories. Mass Effect also has a special place in my collection...

OP and I must have played different games... The game gave you the illusion of choice throughout which I felt made a lot of sense at at the end, and ignoring gameplay immersion breaking horribleness (which hurt the setting in my mind) the story was only decent at best, and really left me expecting the "twist" but thankfully not knowing exactly what it was.

It was a good game, but not a pinnacle of the craft by any means.

Actually....

If you pay close attention to the game Bioshock Ones storyline doesn't really make sense.

Just, ignore the Andrew Ryan thing and you'll find that everything Atlas does doesn't really make a lot of sense.

You will also find many of Andrew Ryans actions don't really make sense. The twist actually BREAKS the majority of the story line. Because to believe the twist you have to believe that both Andrew Ryan and Atlas were either in on it together, or that they both didn't know about the twist. Each scenario doesn't make sense. If the twist is to be believed everything Atlas does is a massive wasted effort. Especially what he does after the twist. The sub scene for BOTH characters doesn't make sense. As well why tenebaum leaves you ignorant when she wants your help doesn't make sense.

Bioshock 2 i liked more simply because it had a logical flow. Characters magically disappeared (Tenebaum.. christ)but the stroyline was consistent. Inconsistency kinda bug me.

Both Storylines weren't that amazing to me. Though i really enjoy BOTH games. A lot. Its just i find so many people are blind sided by this twist that they don't pay attention to how its actually really really dumb.

Please don't flame me to death.... Is just my opinion...
Doesn't she then enter the Minerva's Den storyline, where her character is resolved?

The story to Bioshock has to be one of the most interesting complex stories and even though it was the "spiritual predecessor" to System Shock to, was original in every right. So many twists and turns (one especially), memorable characters, and the best writing and voice acting I've seen in a video game thus far. Does anybody have an think there's an equally or unforgettable turn of events in a game (writing, story, premise, ect.)?
In no particular order:

Baldur's Gate II
Planescape: Torment
Soul Reaver (both)
Shadow of the Colossus
Star Ocean: TSS
Knights of the Old Republic (both)
Starcraft (and Brood War)
Deus Ex (not 2)
Fallout (1 and 2)
(Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but this may be the nostalgia talking)
Morrowind
Escape from Monkey Island
Myst/Riven
Space Quest 6
Legend of Dragoon
X3: Reunion
Chrono Trigger
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

And oh yeah.

SYSTEM SHOCK 2

Now can we please as a community stop gushing over Bioshock and move on?

I've been playing Alan Wake, and i have to say, the story is pretty sweet. Also, convoluted and overwritten they may be, i am addicted to the Metal Gear Solid series
Sigint is the Darpa Chief. Para-medic is Doctor Clarke. Dead Cell represent the original Fox Hound. Excellent story aside, the theme of recurrence and duality is absolutely outstanding in the series. And everything makes sense in the end...
