Is there a disease to make you overweight?

There are diseases that interfere with metabolism, but most aren't severe enough that you gain weight without even realizing it. To be brutally honest, most overweight or obese people brought it on themselves. My friend ate McDonalds for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but still blamed his 300 pound body on "disease". Here's the cure: stop eating crap all day and take a damn walk!

There are several health issues that can lead to weight gain, a lot of which have already been listed above, so I won't repeat them. A few years ago some scientists claimed to have discovered a bacteria that made people fat, but I think it's since been dismissed as bollocks.

Thyroid and hormonal disorders are the chief culprits as far as internal problems are concerned, but a healthy diet and regular excersice can prevent the sufferer becoming obese (but they'll probably always carry more weight than if they didn't have the problem)

I have fibromyalgia so I totally know what it's like to gain weight because of a disease. When my legs are killing me, the only thing I can really do is sit on my ass. It still isn't any excuse for weight gain though. I changed up my portion control and stopped eating dairy products and dropped 30 pounds right away.

I don't think there's a single disease or condition that when combined with a healthy diet (healthy for you, not healthy for everyone) causes obesity.

But there definitely are diseases that require very harsh diets which can be extremely hard to maintain, especially when combined with a busy life.

If you're obese you're not necessarily lazy, far from it (although there are many who are obese and lazy). But you're also not a very disciplined person.

There's likely a lot of obese people who are just as disciplined as the rest of us but have a certain condition that causes that to not be enough.

Glandular fever can also make the sufferer have a greater susceptabililty to obesity, as well as some recent genetic analysis studies indicating that there might be a gene that gives you a similar predisposition.
But by far and away the most common cause is overeating and underexercising- if someones worried about their weight Id personally advise them look at those 2 first before getting a medical answer.

I know that there are health problems that makes maintaining your body hard, and some that might make those extra pounds almost impossible to remove, but I really hope there's not a disease whose main symptom is fatness. Because then the lazy people will use it as an excuse. People with genuine problem need help for those problems. Lazy fat people need a treadmill.

Ugh. You don't know the half of it. No dairy, no soy, no gluten, no red meat, no tomatoes... those were my main food groups. Not anymore of course. :(

I don't envy you. Does that actually leave anything besides greens and possibly chicken?

ChickenSalad4Life? Ouch.

But best of luck with it, you've got my respect for having the discipline to maintain such a diet. I'm not sure I could do it.

Thanks. I do admit to putting ketchup on things every now and then. But it's more like bland food for life. At the end of the day, if I'm not in pain, it's worth it.

Metabolic disorders. And there are certain genes that predispose people to be overweight.

For the majority of people however, this is not an excuse. Being overweight is generally caused by eating too much and exercising too little, and a large proportion of the world doesn't seem to care/know about this.

I don't usually feel much empathy with people over the internet, but seriously all respect to you if that's what you live by and can still say:

It's good to see someone with some real backbone and, possibly, balls on the forums here.

Cake.

No but seriously, I've heard thyroid problems can cause you to gain weight, but I think there are medications for that.

In addition to the numerous physical causes (diseases, medications, genetics etc.), don't forget to consider the mental causes. A number of mental problems are associated with weight gain (largely from failing to take care of yourself - and not caring about it either).

But, as noted, the vast majority of cases comes down to too much in, not enough out.

You can't let that kind of thing ruin your life completely. Obviously, with me, there's still medicine and chiropractic care involved. You need to look at where you are and what you have. If you don't like what you see, change it for the better.

Totally agree, but it's always nice to hear it said. Especially from someone who seems to have it a lot tougher then most of us. It's motivational to hear.

Anyway, just wanted to show my respect for someone who seems to deal with life as it comes amidst all the, in my opinion, whiny people proclaiming to have lost faith in humanity and bitching about how unfair life is on these forums.
