After finishing Dead Space 2 (great game btw) I was wonder of how video game portrays the future, and sadly every single sci fi Video game I've played always tell us that the future will be a dark gloomy unpleasant time.

I mean seriously look at games like System Shock,Doom , Desus Ex, Halo, Crysis , Haze, Fallout and now Dead Space.

In all of those games the future is not pleasant, I know you will need a problem to solve in order to make a game but why not make beautiful future and make that problem threatens certain people at that time and not the whole world.

BUT, maybe there is a game where the future doesn't that I missed, help me Escapists is there any ?

Does it count if you're saving the future from the horrible fate? Other wise it'd be a really weird story. I can't say boring because thats just not true.

Well, Enslaved is certainly prettier than all other future worlds I've seen so far, but it's not really more pleasant, you know with the robots and all that.

Now that you mention it, I'd be hardpressed to come up with any examples as well, but I think this has to do with the fact that the overwhelming majority of games have conflict at heart, and what better way to create conflict than taking a time period who none of us have yet experienced, but which our lives are heading towards? A game in which you lived in a perfect future sounds boring, unless they could make a very, very unique game out of it.

You could argue that the world of Mass Effect isn't all that bad, I mean sure, there is the threat of
Reapers
but a lot of people living in that world, at least the Citadel seems quite content, even if they have minor inconveniences and jobs they'd like you to do. I think that's the closest I can come to an example, at least for now.

Jak II comes to mind really, the future is the present and you're saving it even though its already in a horrible state. Eggy has a good point Ratchet and Clank.

Aside from the, you know, threat of giant hyper advanced robots coming and destroying us all, the mass effect universe is pretty alright.

I'd argue Mass Effect, impending apocalypse aside it seems like a decent place to live. It's not a utopia by any measure, but it's no worse than present day.

Bear in mind that a *large* amount of sci-fi is based around the dystopian idea of the future. Also, you're only seeing part of the world, perhaps the rest of it is a very nice place. Take Dead Space, for example. The necromorphs are nasty, yes, but they are very localized. In fact, the games seem to be pretty civilized places before the aliens come and kill everyone. It could be flowers and sunshine on all the civilized planets.

I suppose the X univese is ok, that is if you dont mind occasionally being harassed by an omnicidal insectoid mindhive or a self-aware AI not unlike but preceeding the Geth from Mass Effect.

Also theres a deeper, much more forceful racism effect going on than ive ever seen in any game.

About Enslaved : It looks prettier than that most of them but it's not a happy future at all.

Mass Effect is not THAT better because humans are suffering from severe cases of Racism and every other race eyes them with jealousy because they have a specter this early. Also in Mass Effect 3 Earth will be invaded, does that sound happy ? no its not.

Ratchet and Clank, those gaems are in the future and it's awesome.
Isn't there a game where Ratchet is enslaved with a collar that kills him if he doesn't fight to death in an arena for blood money?

OT: This is a good question, maybe a Star Wars game?

Mirror's Edge is not a futuristic game, it's "supposed" to be set in present day.

you do realise that Star Wars begin with "Long Time ago .." right ? also it doen't count because Star Wars is not set in our universe.

Same for R&C sadly

The Mass Effect galaxy looks like a nice future to look forward to, as long as we have Shepard to fight off you-know-who. Although I would advise against living in London by the time that age rolls around, unless you want a huge squid-like machine to step on your house and business.

Says who?

It doesn't give indications one way or another, and judging by the references to the November riots, the architecture, the overall EVERYTHING, I'd bet money it takes place in 21XX.

What? No way. I had no idea...

Star Wars is in the future relative to our universe, I am trying to add to the discussion no need to get nit picky.
